Masomenos – Bobby Ep

Bobby Ep it the 5th release of the mysterious producer/label Masomenos (moreorless in English). No one knows who are the producers behind this project, but their music is able to transmit some of the most trendy minimal sounds that i can recall. All I know is that they have a store in Paris so they must be from there! So, in this release you will be listening three groovy minimal techno tracks, starting with “What is this” presenting an huge bassline and some hypno constructions that will surely delight the dancefloor… sublime work! Next, on the b side you’ll listen “On Fait La Java” going to deeper tones and some tribal percussion, it’s also a very pumpy track where everyone will feel the urge to dance! The 4×4 rhythm and the step by step construction is perfect in this one. Finally, b2, showing some “Love” with a tender deep bass and a kind of disturbed sub-bass that’ll get everyone going. It’s a more calm track, with some melodic touches but completely suitable to the crowds needs! The 5th release to what should be a great new label, don’t miss this exciting new project. Played by Luciano and Sis, among others.

a1 - What is this?
b1 - On Fait La Java
b2 - Love

‘Watergate 02′ mixed by Sascha Funke: Interview

r-1474872-1222444845Yesterday was released the second mixed Cd of the Watergate Sessions. After having Onur Oezer in their first session it was time to invite Mr. Sascha Funke to develop a genuine DJ mix. It was recorded at the Watergate Club on a warm August night using records of various ages. Any and all cracklings and sounds from the needle touching down come from the use of vinyl records, are deliberate and desired, and are an integral part of the sound of this authentic DJ mix. Sascha Funke is an honest-to-goodness Berliner and he played a significant role in molding and forming the techno scene in this city. After releasing his long-awaited second album ‘Mango’ on his own label Bpitch Records early in 2008, his DJ Mix for the Watergate Club in Berlin is now his second achievement for the year. In addition to current tracks and remixes from his own album, the mix is interlaced with carefully chosen jewels and rarities from years past. One of the best mixed cd’s of the year!

It was with great satisfaction that we interviewed Sascha Funke directly to the minimaland.com readers:

Minimaland.com: First up the traditional question: How did you get interested in making electronic music?

Sascha: At the beginning of the 90´s Berlin was already a big spot in the techno scene. So it was quite easy to get in touch with the music. I was listening every week to Marushas radio show, and she explained where are the good clubs and where you get the records. So she was teaching me in a way:)

Minimaland.com: You are easily one of the top artists in the Berlin scene, you have been producing music since the 90… How does a guy maintains such a high-level of production for almost a decade now!? What’s the secret? Devotion? Passion?

sascha funke

Sascha: Thanks for the compliment. I don´t know, maybe i released never something i don´t feel safe with it. less quantity more quality. and over the years i always tried to do something new. try to reinvent myself, in the studio i´m quite often bored, if i work with the same sounds all the time, and devotion passion, i think everyone has to make it with this.

Minimaland.com: You had quite a year. You released your second album, you had a couple of excellent Ep’s and now you’re releasing this mixed Cd on Watergate. What’s left?

Sascha: Maybe a vacation? no, to be honest i had an excellent year and i´ll continue playing until new years eve. i´m still fit for the next parties. and slowly i´m starting again to produce some new tracks for a single on Bpitch.

Minimaland.com: Your album “Mango” has received good critics around the globe! Do you consider this your biggest project so far related to production?

Sascha: Definitely, yes. i never worked so hard for something before in my life. and i moved to a quiet place in the south of France to produce with more concentration then in the crazy city of Berlin. for my next album i´ll do it again.

Minimaland.com: It cannot be easy to do such good productions for so long as you’ve been. Where do you usually find inspiration to create music?

Sascha: In many ways. especially for mango i was inspired by the wonderful nature of the province and the way to life there. Everything was more relaxed. but as a DJ of course the main inspiration comes from the music. in clubs where i play, in records i´m listening to. And at least from the history of pop music, i am lucky to grow up in a time when pop music had so many interesting styles and sounds.

Minimaland.com: The electronic scene has been in a huge development  over the last few years, therefore more demanding in terms of music know-how and software/hardware! How do you stand yourself in this process? How have you been adapting?

Sascha: I try to follow:) i´m not that big nerd who is always hiding for the newest plug in. i have my set up and i know how to use it, the rest comes from the feeling. for mango i ask my fellow fritz Zander (one part of Zander Vt of Bpitch) to make a final mix. he did a great job. i think i´ll continuing these kind of way. the “sound” of a record is getting more and more important with all that technological options.

funke2Minimaland.com: Mango is definitely one of the most talked tracks of the year, it’s an unique original production but it was also already remixed by some great producers! What did you liked the most in Superpitcher, Tobia Thomas and Dj Koze’s re-works?

Sascha: It depends. Both are very different and as a DJ i can play it considering the moment of the night. That´s why i am so happy with both results. Beside that, they had to do it. Cause, last summer, we all together, created the word “mango” in our new boys language. So it was the final chapter of our private mango story. Mango means something is very beautifunl and unique and that´s it.

Minimaland.com: Now let’s talk a bit about this DJ Mix for the Watergate club. What were your thoughts when recording this cd!?

Sascha: Let´s do a mix which is not full of the newest and hippest minimal tracks. Try to do something timeless, which shows the people your own character not only as a DJ. Some tracks can definitely telling a story. moments in clubs i had and i took these moments home, now to recreate them again on Cd. I think this is for me the sence of a mix cd.

Minimaland.com: Watergate has a great name in the electronic nowadays scene. Do you consider this album a great achievement in your career?

Sascha: Oh ja. I was proud that they asked me. I play there now for a long long time. Had perfect parties. The whole staff was always very gentle to me. It´s a nice way to say “thank you” to this club.

Minimaland.com: Choosing 14 tracks to put in a mix for one of the best clubs in Berlin cannot be easy! How was the process of selection?

Sascha: Some old and new pearls who were following me in my dj case for a long time. I had 6 or 7 more, but there are just 74 minutes on a cd. So i had to kick some out of the selection, but i prefer only 14 tracks then let´s say 22. With the respect to track i pick, I don´t want destroy them. Some of them need more than 3 minutes to express themselves. I hate these “22 tracks mix cd´s”

Minimaland.com: Are you happy with how it’s turned out?

Sascha: Of course. And we do a special release party. I could win Dj koze to play with me all night long, it´s not so easy to get him. He´s playing in Berlin every year just for one time. I also like the packaging a lot. the cover is genius. The cock is great. They asked me for some other animals, but when i saw the cock i fall in love with him:) i hope they press some t-shirts as well.

Minimaland.com: So can we expect this to be something played by Sascha Funke around club gigs, or is it something to be appreciated with some kind of different mood?

Sascha: Some tracks I still play almost every night. But this is something I wanted to show and explain with the Cd. Every night is different and so the cd has many different moods in it.

Minimaland.com: I read that you’ve used only vinyl in this record. Do you prefer it over digital or you don’t make any exclusions?

Sascha: As a DJ in Berlin it’s still so easy to get the best vinyl. As long as i can get it, i´ll not leaving it. I play a few cd´s from unreleased tracks but if as soon as they are available on vinyl i buy it. That´s why on the mix is one track played from Cd. The Sten track was not out on vinyl in that moment.

Minimaland.com: What artists, producers & labels are inspiring you at the moment?

Sascha: I like some names they always doing quality, like Matthias Kaden or Koze or the whole Dial label. and of course i also like these labels around Oslo, but in my mix they are just apart. I try to connect them with older records or outstanding tracks like “Township funk” by Dj Mojuba. This is the spice for me. Surprise!

Minimaland.com: Name your top 3 albums of all time that suddenly pop in your head!

Sasha: Roxy Music – Avalon
Love inc. – Life´s a gas
Pet Shop Boys – Introspective

Minimaland.com: Who are you outside the music? What do you like to do? How do you spend your free time?

Sascha: I spend a lot of time with watching football. That’s my main passion beside the music. And i spend a lot of time just with friends, having dinner drinking wine. yes i´d say i´m a quite communicative person. I need the team around me.
like a football player:)

Minimaland.com: Wishing you the best, hope we can meet again in the future! Thanks for all (the interview and your delicate productions)

Cheers

Stephan Hinz – Bacala

AM 33 05.fh10Kling Klong, Renaissance or even Boxer recordings are some of the labels, carriers of good works made by Stephan Hinz. But it’s Martin Eyerer who has been following Hinz’s works more closely, like : Shangai or Tucan. After the remarkable Ep edited by Kickboxer(  parent label of boxer recordings) named “Etudes For Rhords & Canned Strings” comes back to Audiomatique to launch this fantastic work named Bacala. It’s a disc composed by two musics, one of them being a remix produced by Adultnapper. In the a side we have the original track, presenting a fabulous construction, very well defined, step by step and a dark pack of tones that will surely have a great success on the dancefloors during the coming Winter. In the b side it’s Adultnapper who enters in action, applying some obscure tones and glancing some parts of the original track giving to it a higher dark consistency. It’s definitely an excellent choice to a crazy late evening in a tender rainy day.

Ricardo Tobar – With You

Directly from Chile we present you Ricardo Tobar. He has been in the scene for a couple of time, having previously released three Ep’s at Border Community, always presenting deep melodic environments in his productions. Boomkat.com compared him to The Field and we totally agree on that, it’s the same kind of sound, but obviously with another influences going on. This time on Traum, Tobar presents a album full of unexpected pleasures. The first two tracks can also remind us producers like Extrawelt or Oxia… music directly made to enter through your brain…  “La otra playa” is to be danced with your eyes closed, imagining you’re in a spectacular landscape where nothing bad can happen or even exist… amazing journey! “With you” invests on a harder rhythm never forgetting the melodic part. I can’t stop listening this one…  the amount of feelings that are transmitted in this one is something unexplainable… you’ll have to listen it for yourself and see! “Escalera A Central”, the last track of the release, starts with a pretty good kickdrum and some darker samples setting up the pace. A great one to enhance some evil energies, pure underground rhythm and neurotic melody showing a different look on Ricardo Tobar’s productions! It’s another won bet on Traum (it couldn’t go wrong), electronic melodic songs, always with a dancefloor range.

Fabric 43 : Metro Area

Some musical partnerships seem to require a leap of faith or a suspension of our collective disbelief; others progress come along so naturally that the synergy almost seems fated, their work resolutely undeniable. Brooklyn-based Metro Area (Morgan Geist and Darshan Jesrani) is of the latter group without doubt: a beautifully harmonious relationship wherein the duo push and pull in all the right directions without compromise. Although both listened to pop RnB/electro of the mid 80s growing up in quiet pockets of the East coast (Darshan in Poughkeepsie, New York and Morgan in New Jersey), they independently found themselves drawn to synthesizers and the techy side of producing long before they discovered one another.

Morgan Geist: “I feel like I was designed to do studio work or electronic music; it must be in my genes or something. When I was little I used to tape myself playing something on the piano and then I’d rewind, play it back and play over it. So before I even had a sequencer, I was doing live multi-tracking when I was quite small. And I remember my dad had ‘Future Shock’ by Herbie Hancock; I remember reading the back of that record and triying to figure out what a Memory Moog and Mini Moog were. Speaking of which, weirdly enough – it’s like fate set it up for me – when I was really young, I had a babysitter who was a musician and he used to bring over synthesizer catalogues. I used to look at these Roland catalogues and, even though I didn’t know what they were, just the synth names – like, Juno and Jupiter – it was the kind of shit that a little boy could get into. I got a keyboard as soon as I could, when I was about 15.”

Darshan Jesrani: “My dad had a lot of Indian music, as he’s from Bombay. He used to play Lata Mangeshkar and all the hi-fi stuff was in the living room, so I gravitated toward it by looking through all of the records. He also had an open-reel tape deck and I used to play with that a lot. One of Kiss FM’s DJs, Shep Bettibone, did special remixes of R&B hits and very early rap, and those were amazing to me, because he would stretch out and edit the songs and emphasise all the electronic, trippy sounds and textures in them. These were really dance-y and oriented towards club play; they really caught my ear and imagination. That really propelled me in the synthesizer direction, along with a lot of synth-pop stuff like Devo and Thomas Dolby. There was a confluence of things that led me into synthesizer stuff, but I didn’t actually get a synthesizer till I was about 16.” but I didn’t actually get a synthesizer till I was about 16.”

As Morgan and Darshan migrated towards equally remote areas of America for college (Darshan staying in the east coast and Morgan relocating to the Midwest) and gradually coaxed releases from the closed confines of their dorms (Morgan even started his label, Environ, in his dorm room), they simultaneously lived their formative years feeling somewhat misunderstood and somewhat misplaced musically. It’s a sentiment that’s rung true from when they met each other on email lists in the days before internet forums through their early days when the two first teamed up as an avant-garde, creatively unbound production/DJ team.

Darshan Jesrani: “Because we went to school in such isolated areas, we were both on these music mailing lists. It was the text email equivalent of chat boards. From the conversations we were having on the mailing lists, I really liked where Morgan was coming from. A friend of mine had one of his first records and I was really into it. I don’t think we met until right after we graduated, around ’95 or ’96. We met in the city, at a record store on 14th Street, just to get some records and chat. We tried to make some things together around 1996, first experiments. I think Morgan and I have different, but complimentary, angles that we approach the music from. Taken broadly, we’re into the same thing, but we have slightly different styles, or we’ll play slightly different records – sometimes we overlap.”

Morgan Geist: “When we first met, we had similar tastes but coming from a different perspective. Like with Ron Trent or Derrick Carter, I would have something coming from the more abstract tracky Chicago side, and he was more into the house side of it. It was sort of revelatory, because we’d have almost the same artists in our collections but we didn’t know each other’s records.”

With disco-infused sounds seducing unsuspecting Londoners across a wide spectrum of independent scenes, step beyond the pigeon-holed scenesters and step up to Metro Area’s brand of obscure disco, which they have promoted with no regard for hype or popularity since their very first dancefloor explorations. Both gifted producers with a knack for textures and dynamics, Metro Area embraces sweetly tuned synths and warm grooves, effortlessly unifying the synthetic and the organic and, likewise, fusing early Detroit techno and Chicago house with 70s boogie and Harlem-birthed underground disco. While their vibrant releases (from the depth of ‘Atmospherique’ on Metro Area 1 in ‘97 to the shimmering brilliance of ‘Miura’ on 2001’s Metro Area 4 to the classy disco shine of ‘07’s Metro Area 7) are deemed nothing short of classic today, it took a little while for the rest of the world to catch up.

Morgan Geist: “In college, I always felt out of step with everyone – even at Oberlin in ‘95, I’d DJ Chicago Trax records, Detroit techno records and Kraftwerk, and people would fucking run off the floor. (laughs) I felt completely isolated when I was there. That’s why I’d go to Detroit and Chicago, just to get away. So I started DJing in college, and then Darshan and I started playing together. And we were playing disco, so it was also a phase of feeling out of step – for a long time, I felt like people didn’t really get it, and all of a sudden, people sort of came around. I keep hearing people say how there’s some disco renaissance now, and I don’t really understand where why people are saying that – I would say it happened in 2001, 2002, 2003. Maybe it’s just because Hercules & Love Affair is everywhere now? Or maybe it’s because I’m in New York.”

Fabric 43, an artistically arranged and brightly coloured journey through Metro Area’s vast record collections, remains as reflective as it is forward-thinking. Metro Area deliver a peerless jam-packed mix of Easy Street dance classics (World Premiere’s “Share The Night”) through to 80’s club hits (“Work For Love” by Ministry), with a generous helping of disco and boogie anthems and electropop output from the likes of Premiere Class. Poppy and infectious, retro and yet timeless, Fabric 43 dazzles with uplifting dancefloor gold.

Darshan Jesrani: “It’s a really mixed bag of music, but it’s all really groovy stuff. There’s some not so obvious disco, there’s some sort of really spare and weird NY house tracks – we had to figure out how to make it cohesive. We did a few of our own custom deep tracks and made some little drum tracks and little mixing utilities to throw in there as well.”

Morgan Geist: “We’re trying to not put in the classic records that we’ve played forever. We wanted to explore an area that’s not mined so heavily, but still have an emphasis on the older disco stuff. So we thought we’d do a mid 80s sort of thing, which is kind of a neglected time period but there’s some really nice records from then. With fabric mix CDs, it can sometimes be so homogenous; it’s like this perfect, classy, very coherent single thought. But that’s not how we DJ, so I think we decided we’d try and touch on a lot of different things, almost like a party mix. We’ve made some rhythm tracks to tie it all together, our own original edits. I actually really hate the re-edit culture that’s going on, where everything’s just a bootleg or an edit. I’m really pro personal-use-edits, that’s what edits should be anyway.”

Johnny D – Requiem of a Dream

t00v0jAfter some releases on Oslo Label and a mixed cd for cocoon (disco invaders – cocoon ibiza summer mix), Johnny D (Johannes Debese), strokes now on 8 bit records, label run by Nick Curly and Gorge (Nick Curly also runs Cécille together with Marc S), based in Mannheim, Germany. This Ep, “Requiem of a Dream”, appears as a delight to our ears. The first track, “Requiem of a Dream”, starts very gentle with a background violin sound almost unperceptible. As the medium harmony make their indoctrinated games, a new bass appears and the music keeps growing in a progressive way till the moment the violin sound appears with a new evolution, as the registry maintains the same, this is minimalism!… Keeps going in a beautiful way, new sounds added, but the main record maintains the same. This, gentleman’s, is 8 minutes of pure delight…The second track, “Scope of mind”, starts a little more bassed, but the formula is the same. Great under construction, every bpm space very filled without a lot of samples. It seems simple and easy, but it’s not. Nowadays some artists add a lot of things to a track, and that’s not minimalism, it’s more confusion,.Johnny D has a word to say on that, appears to be the message underneath this Ep.Great harmony powered by great bass chains in a very progressive well structured final result appears to me as the best description for this Ep. Not heavy, but heaven :) Supported already by names like Nick Curly, Ricardo Villalobos, Loco Dice among others…

Efdemin – Carry On, Pretend We’re Not In The Room

Phillip Sollmann aka Efdemin’s will be releasing his debut mixed-cd on Curle Recordings, it’s called “Carry On, Pretend We’re Not in The Room” and it’s totally recommended. His unique way of doing music turned him into one of Dial favorite producers and now and now, on Curle Recordings he presents a couple of fresh weapons to be shot at any club nearby! We have a fresh mix of this guy, from this month of October that was kindly given to us by Curle Recordings, enjoy it while the Cd doesn’t come out… to be released in the 17th of November!

Press Release:
“After releasing his first full-length album on Dial in 2007 and putting out remixes for Dessous, Bpitch Control, Morris Audio and Lan Muzic, Efdemin was constantly behind the decks somewhere, presenting his idea of music. Ably blending deep and classic house, modern berlin and detroit techno. Where Efdemin’s earlier production work was rather focused on slow, abstract house in the vein of Theo Parrish, he has slowly turned to a more functional approach without losing his special sense for deepness. His sound design has become more unobscured and broad. And he knows just how to adjust old school influences to contemporary listening habits. His unique dj-style, with its eclectic mix of strict but deeply detailed tracks, provides a continual sense of excitement and creates a kind of grace over the night.
We are very proud to announce now Efdemin’s debut mix-cd, including tracks from respected producers such as Scott Grooves, Brothers’ Vibe, Minilogue, Dettmann & Klock, Patrice Scott, Surgeon, Photek and Tobias. Avoiding a selection of easy hits in favour of a well thought out collection of secret weapons, personal favourites and undiscovered beauties, this is a mix that you won’t get tired of hearing.
The mix is released on Curle, the label where Efdemin released his biggest track to date, Acid Bells, that topped last year’s charts. It is the first CD on Curle, a label founded in 2006, with releases from Dub Kult, Mark August, Michal Ho, Anthony Collins and Nico Purman, to name a few, under its belt.

Tracklisting:
1. The Showroom Recording Series – Watcha Waiting For?
2. Patrice Scott – Deep Again
3. Craig Alexander – Soul Revival
4. Tony Foster – It Is All Around Us
5. Scott Grooves – Only 500
6. Brothers’ Vibe – Cuero Para Mi Gente (Altered Vibe Mix)
7. Tobias. – Second To None
8. Stephan Grieder & The Persuader – Kaos

Paul Kalkbrenner – Berlin Calling OST

473cfa8b588fThe featured artist this week was very easy to choose. Paul Kalkbrenner, the old school German producer has recently released what is already considered his biggest album to date. He is easily one of top5 best live acts I’ve seen in my life and his music is able to transmit such feelings that nobody else does. Obviously Bpitch Control is the label behind this released, their work with Kalkbrenner has been going on for ages and the union seems to enhance the results in both sides.
This release is a special launch of an  OST to a movie called “Berling Calling” where the main artists of the cast are Dj Ickarus (P. Kalkbrenner) and his girlfriend Mathilde (Rita Lengyel). The movie portrays the life of techno dj as it really is including: gigs, relationships, record deals, touring and drug use. This is the closest you will get to real life. Seems like a movie that we all should watch and listen – the OST was all produced by Kalkbrenner. The plot is set, let’s talk about music:
The album starts with “Aaron” a low-pitch track perfect to start a set. Great Beat and soft melody to go along. The next two tracks also dive through soft rhythms, perfect to be listened in one of those special party’s. “Sky and Sand” was the first track that really caused a different impact on me when I listened the album. The accapela is great and all the power t

hat is created when the beat starts is simply amazing. I’m having goosebumps just by remembering it.
What more can i say? The album goes on and one with pure German productions, always presenting deep melodies with an arrow pointed to your heart (and soul) (e.g. “Square 1″, “Bengang”, “Moob”). There are also some Special edits of previously released tracks like “Altes Kamuffel”, “Atzepent” or “Castenets”. There’s even a new remix of one of the major Berlin hits this year – and that we so much appreciate – “Sascha Funke – Mango”. One last note to the Special Berlin Calling Edit on “Gebrunn Gebrunn” remembering us what music should be all about: feeling, enjoyment and attitude. This was the music that Paul Kalkbrenner ended his last set here in Portugal leaving us crying out for more.
Paul Kalkbrenner delivers a couple of great new tools and also some that we all knew from his sets but were previously unreleased! Berling Calling OST is already one of the best albums of the year. Don’t miss the movie also.
