Akufen – Real Grooves Yellow Tokyo

akufenMarc Leclair aka Akufen has come a long way in the six years since the release of his now-classic debut album, My Way (Force Inc. 2002). In that time he’s garnered a reputation as one of the planet’s most in-demand DJ’s – not to mention one of the scene’s most talented – delivering prime-time sets to exuberant crowds all over the world.

This guy’s music is completely different from the usual. He is highly respect by everyone among the mnml world. If you don’t know this project that’s a shame, but don’t wait more time and listen his set recorded at Samurai Fm. Akufen presents Real Grooves Yellow Tokyo, real music, different world!

Andrea Gentile & Diego Capri – Thirty Ep

einmaleins39It’s always a special pleasure to present a new release on Einmaleins. This label will probably be considered the best of the year, their releases seem to be unique, always full of quality, exploring another sides of this kind of music. This time they invited Andrea Gentile & Diego Capri to show out their skills. The duo from Rome producers has been in the scene for two years now and in fact have been doing pretty good things. Thirty Ep is a deep dark minimal kind of album, highly detailed production, perfect musical harmony. They started this with “Gigrobot” introducing us to their dark environments. Its a track that grows gradually, step by step, with an interesting recycling after the breaks. I’s quite mysterious and we just can’t predict whats coming next! On the flipside we got other two enjoyable tracks: “Doubletruck” is another one of those stripped down minimal techno tunes that we like so much here in minimaland. All the things are done with low synths and low beats, giving you an atmosphere of fear and seduction till the end. Dark! “Reakone” closes down this Ep with a higher techno feeling, not as minimal as the others, but more powerful and neurotic, perfect to demanding dancefloors. Enjoy!

Samples:
a1 - Gigrobot
b1 - Boubletruck
b2 – Reakone

Marco Carola – Bloody Cash Ep

carolaThe Italian Techno producer born in Naples is one of those guys that decided to put an end in his hardtechno productions and run through more deep minimal patterns. Marco Carola has already edited a few Ep’s in this new condition and he is easily achieving great success. Bloody Cash Ep it’s definitely his most brilliant release on Plus 8 records presenting four blasting tracks that will make wonders in the dancefloors. The release has 4 quality tracks that bet on great level of synths and some keyboard riff’s going along with some trendy beats creating an unique dance flow… that’s exactly what happens in the first track, “Bloody Cash”, flawless track, unstoppable rhythm, huge tech mnml construction. b side track is “Serins”, going through a different environment, clearly more electronic, but also with a pretty good double kick. Lot’s of snares, ups and downs, amazing groove!
There’s two digital onyl tracks, the first is my favorite of the all release – “Pampero” – build step by step, it presents a classic Carola bassline. It’s surely a perfect Dj Tool, a easy-going track to rise the moods among the dancefloor. Finally Carola takes a “Long Jump” into a resilient growing groove with some pretty good tools. Beats & more beats… a great work where Carola confirms his position in the scene. Now, let the dancefloor dance… pure medicine!

tracklisting:
a1 - Bloody Cash
b1 - Serin
Pampero – Digital only
Long Jump – Digital only

Fabric 44: John Tejada

jt_fabric_053Rhythm has always been the string that holds together the vibrant, flowing fabric of John Tejada’s career – even from the age of 8, when he lost himself in a love affair with the drums, or from the age of 12, when he first started DJing. Far too young to DJ at clubs, John spent his youth DJing hip hop (“The stuff that struck me most was always sort of Arthur Baker sound – Planet Rock, Planet Pattrol, Egyptian Lover and the Kraftwerk influence”) at school dances and throughout the backyard party scene in sunny Los Angeles. It’s rather difficult to imagine John Tejada, nothing short of a techno legend – a linchpin in the scene’s development as a seminal producer, DJ, remixer and label owner – being a hip hop DJ.

“The electronic sounds that now would be considered something else were part of hip hop culture; it was those sounds that I latched onto when I first heard acid house and early Chicago stuff. DJing back then, I felt this responsibility to play more mainstream sounds. That’s been a constant battle my whole life: to want to make people get into experimental sounds, but then also having to realize that it’s a party, people want to dance. Finding that middle ground that might make everyone happy is still, to this day, something that I have trouble with.” – John Tejada

John certainly has had no trouble finding a core audience despite his experimental tendencies. Even as a teenager, unable to get into the groove of high school because he was obsessed by the grooves of his records, he got hooked up with a college radio show in LA called Fly ID, which instantly (and unknowingly) became a cult sensation. Upon meeting a kindred spirit named Arian Leviste, John ditched a scholarship for a prestigious art school and instead threw himself straight into the studio world, working at a sound library/post-production music company. The two of them put their hand to collaborative productions in ’91 and the chemistry was absolute: together, the expansive pair has produced over a dozen singles and three immaculate albums.

As a solo artist, John Tejada’s prolific discography is daunting to behold, with 11 albums under his ever-expanding belt (for labels such as Plug Research, Playhouse and Immigrant), in addition to four as I’m Not A Gun with guitarist Takeshi Nishimoto. He’s also unleashed a myriad of EP’s with a mind-boggingly enviable list of labels (Pokerflat, 7th City and ~scape, to name but a very few), not forgetting his endless remix work for the likes of Ghostly, KMS, Buzzin’ Fly, Gigolo Records and Sub Pop. In 1996, John launched his own label, Palette, as a freeing outlet for his own infinite productions. Now celebrating well over 50 releases, Palette has opened its arms to The Rip Off Artist, Pieter K, DJ Abstract, Dominick Martin, Dave Hughes, as well as John’s highly-celebrated collaborations with Justin Maxwell and of course his old friend, Arian (who he still tours with quite regularly).

john-tejada-fabric-44“My newest project is a band project I do with a friend, ‘I’m Not A Gun,’ which was on a Berlin label called City Centre Offices for 3 albums. It’s almost indie-rock-jazz. I felt like I have a label to branch out the Palette sounds – it doesn’t have to be pinned down to techno or house – so we’ve just released our most recent album on Palette. I’ve created music that people would call up-tempo ambient, techno house, drum and bass or whatever – people get so hung up on genres. Honestly what I’m producing, even if it’s live instrumentation with the band, is all based on rhythm and melody. Some of it’s faster and some of it’s slower. A lot of people don’t like that explanation, but to me it’s a very honest explanation. The process is the same.” – John Tejada

On fabric 44, John Tejada swoops in and swells with a deep, pulsating mix that swallows the listener whole. Breeding energetic beats amongst beautifully woven layers and intricate patterns, the mix hypnotizes and stuns with complex sonic artistry. A dense masterclass in melodic techno, fabric 44 features the driving feel of the Palette All Stars (Tejada with Arian Leviste and Justin Maxwell), the distinct rhythmic stomp of Orbital, slick harmonics from Beatstreet’s Pigeon, and Tejada’s own synth-heavy bleeps, all wrapped in a warm electronic embrace.

“When I finally listened to the mix, I put a lot of attention to detail of the way the tracks came together in and out. I did edit the tracks quite a bit, but it’s really subtle and it just helps with the flowing journey, to take it one step above of what you might hear when a DJ plays out. I wanted the whole track selection to turn into one piece of music: a techno-classical piece that has movements and moods from start to finish, like conducting an electronic symphony.” – John Tejada

Starbug – Hummelbar

cs332367-01b-bigStarbug is the (recent) project that I suggest to our readers today. I have few info’s on this one, I read they are the new hot stuff from one of the hidden champs of the Rhein-Main-Area on the recent electronic curcuit. They might be hidden but they have been doing some great productions and all of them have been released on their own label – Starbugs Recordings. This Ep is their 6th release and has already been supported by producers like Luciano, Villalobos, Dan Curtin, Barem and Matt Star, among others. It’s really a cool tech minimal project with some stylish tribal tendencies. “Hummelbar” is composed by three flavored club tunes. a1 track is a massive one, with some great basslines around a deep tribal construction that shows all the quality that this guys have. Next it’s “Reine Nervensache” – b1 – that shows up… a perfect tool to every Dj with a quite good rhythm, some low level synths and a somehow neurotic construction. The last track is “Zoink” and I must say that it’s quite a way to end this Ep. I immediately fell in love for this one… the construction goes step by step, the beat is very good and the bassline huge. Pumpy, highly detalied, minimal techno cuts that will have a massive effect on the dancefloors.
Brilliant, seductive minimal project with all the inputs to be one of the best in the scene! We expect a great future to this Starbug releases. Not to loose out of sight!

a1 - Hummelbar
b1 - Reine Nervensache
b2 - Zoink

Delete & Colmenares – Sirve?

l-84733-1179856725 Sirve? Ep is a collaboration between Venezuelan producers Sergio Muñoz a.k.a Delete & his friend Miguel Colmenares. Both artists got together for a couple of sessions in the concrete jungle that is Caracas and the result was a weird but groovy collection of sounds showings us the best Latin flavors of the mnml market. If you know Delete from previous works you might remind some weird disturbed sounds like Frankie and that kind of genre… this Ep is not about that kind of music, it’s softer, turned up to minimal patterns, just as we like it. “Si sirve” is a shuffled-groove track with many different elements that somehow fit together, this reminds me a lot Ricardo Villalobos tracks presented in his 2004 album Thé Au Harem D’Archimède. “No sirve” on the other hand is a straighter track with a strong analogue feel. “Si sirve” gets the remix treatment by Easy Changes – one of our favorites – who offer a straight-up dancefloor approach that slowly builds into a massive groove, the construction of the track is purely amazing, straight minimal roots while pompelmoessap deliver a big room concoction of their own for those in need of a darker version of the original – our fav track of the Ep. rounding up the release is a final remix on the experimental tip with quit quite quick’s rendition of “si sirve”. Minimaland recommends it to all the fans of Villalobos productions! Released on  Produkt Schallplatten

Gaiser – Blank Fade

m67_pac_shot_smallGAISER
Blank Fade
M67 CD, LP, WAV, MP3

Rls Date: 19.11.2008

In a genre where artists often struggle for identity, Jon Gaiser is one of those rare producers whose sound is instantly recognisable. The solo projects, collaborations and remixes he’s created over the course of his output on Minus, all contain a very specific signature to the point where his tracks come alive, communicating in a language that speaks with the strangest, most intoxicating of tongues.

His highly anticipated debut album, Blank Fade, is no exception, and it sees him pushing the envelope even further resulting in the most comprehensive and impressive body of work he has accomplished so far. Alongside this he has taken full advantage of the vinyl, digital and CD formats on offer to not only produce a collection of stunning individual tracks but also to mix them together in a way that typically reflects his live performance. The body of the tracks remain the same but Gaiser works the seamless transitions to the max by extending the intros and outros to reproduce those magical live moments when a third place momentarily slips into view. In doing so he has created an experience where the whole piece becomes greater than the sum of the parts.

Blank Fade represents a mixture of tried and tested ideas generated on the road (such as the show-stopping first single Trunkated) and new material written during Minus’ 10 weeks of silence. The main premise for the album is to start in one place and end up in another without realising and seeing how Gaiser’s music works like a soundtrack to some hidden nocturnal habitat, full of weird and wonderful creatures that stalk the darkness, it’s not long before we’re lost in the forest of his imagination.

Eerie and atmospheric, Volve sets the scene perfectly, drifting amid a wash of distant echoes and ghostly EFX before a solitary kick drum punctures the darkness. Face Down continues the theme, gradually picking up the pace as the beats begin alternating around a tight, metronomic snare. A pulsing sub bass loop carries the groove while abstract vocal cut-ups penetrate deep into the subconscious. With a perfectly executed mix, Ground effortlessly switches to a 4/4 kick pattern as Gaiser slowly turns the screw, continuing the unearthly vocal theme against a sparse backdrop of crackling electricity and metallic drones. Suddenly we’re in classic territory as Ciliate With lets fly with a trademark bass riff that’s soon joined by one of those memorable bleeping call and response riffs that could only ever be the work of Gaiser.

Whether Or Not maintains the tension with an equally urgent bass line and a brutal snare that powers head first into a swarm of warping synth lines, before Substance B turns in a percussive frenzy that’s as devastating as it is intuitive and will create absolute mayhem on the dance floor. The CD overlap into Comma, Fade is as good as they get, ushering in a more subliminal groove driven by a funked up bass/organ riff and cantering percussion, while Leave It dims the lights once again with pitched down vocals and distant, drifting sirens that add a hint of menace to the mix.

This all sets things up perfectly for Trunkated – a real powerhouse of a track, that’s as complete as anything you’re likely to hear this year. Every element is honed to perfection from the molten bass to the irresistible percussion parts, from the mischievous, dancing bleeps to the twisted synth motif that seems to rip through the delicate fabric of reality. Descending Order then goes into freefall, releasing the pressure value as distant melodies gently eat into your serotonin supply and you lose yourself in the breakdown. One After continues the theme utilising a sliding, bass driven variation of the preceding melody as the beats finally begin to thin out, allowing the slow, ambient drift of Outline to smooth out the fragmented memories of what has gone before and draw things neatly to a close.

Finally, the unmixed digital download album also includes the bonus track Rate 78.17, a beatless exercise in bass manipulation that represents another experimental string to Gaiser’s bow and in doing so, suggests there’s much more to come from this exceptional producer, musician and live performer.
