Hector – Got Fringe?

la052-1Mr Hector is natural from Guadalajara, Mexico but has moved a long time to London where he rapidly established himself as one of the most exciting young producers and DJ’s in the scene. His first 12″ was “La Raza” released on Horizontal (Dinky’s label) last year finding his way into sets by by the likes of Onur Ozer, Villalobos and Dinky. His Dj sets have lots of energy, precision and soul and his day-job running one of the world’s most renowned.
record shops— Phonica in London—has made him and his extensive record collection a popular choice at clubs such as Fabric, T Bar, Weekend and Watergate. “Got Fringe” is the most recent work of this newest addition of mobilee’s roster. The ep counts with 3 very nice tracks where the main keys are “Taking Me For a Ride” and the digital exclusive “Canaca”. The first of this two is a tune marked by a step by step construction and a great deep mnml flow. The voices that go along with the beat fit perfectly in it making it a really good dancefloor joint! This track is the perfect example of minimal patterns and rhythms, it has got a slow bpm beat, very effective and danceable where the feelings seem to be rising all the time. “Canaca” is all about percussion… the beat is very dense with an awesome bassline and the rhythm is very pumpy reminding me some moments of the past, when Detroit tech house was ruling the world. Promising release in one of the best labels of the market!

Jay Haze – Fabric 47

jay-hazeIt’s difficult to know where to begin with an artist as complex and multifaceted as Jay Haze. On one hand, his upbringing – desolate beginnings in the processing plant-infested lands of northeast Pennsylvania, surrounded by drug addiction, death, group homes and jail – is a tainted window into the complicated soul within. But on the other hand, against all odds, nothing has overshadowed his talents, and the family of like-minded artists he has shaped is testament to his unshakable spirit and unerring ability.

Jay Haze stands out as a visionary in the world of techno and house, a true nonconformist within a blinkered scene. But his work supports his revered status as an exceedingly prolific producer, DJ, live performer, collaborator and label owner. His wide-ranging labels ring true to themselves and never sway, each holding on tight to their own characteristic sound and group of artists: the house-oriented TuningSpork; the harder hitting tech-based Contexterrior and the downtempto dubby tones of Future Dub.

“TuningSpork was always the more housey one. Getting people to laugh is a form of seduction, and that’s what TuningSpork is about: being positive, funny, not taking itself too seriously. Then Contexterrior was more serious, more avant garde, more pushing the limits of sounds. I started TuningSpork with Sean O’Neal, aka Someone Else, and Bjoern Hartman, and then I started Contexterrior on my own. Future Dub was a label that exists, but never really existed. We have had 6 releases in 9 years, it was just for my love of dub reggae; if it comes, I’ll release it. I have so many different musical loves.” – Jay Haze

fabric47_jay_haze200Jay also brought on the explosion of 2003’s Textone, his inventive creation of an online music magazine and internet label, which was created years before digital stores like Beatport or the now-prevalent online magazines/blogs had caught on. Beyond his own labels, Jay Haze’s genre-expanding, experimental productions have graced the catalogues of Playhouse, Kitty-Yo, Cocoon, Get Physical, and his remixes have been on labels far and wide, from Shitkatapult to Playhouse to BPitch Control to Soma. In 2005, he released his debut LP on Kitty-Yo, ‘Love For a Strange World,’ an album that challenged the world of techno further by questioning genre lines and embracing all that’s unconventional and unpredictable. His more dancefloor (and humour) geared moniker Fuckpony launched his career with Get Physical, the ‘Children of Love’ album being one of the most celebrated underground albums of 2006.

It’s interesting that someone whose life story has so many dark chapters still dedicates much of his music to love – wearing his heart on his record sleeves, for instance, as well as his endless dedication to charity work. “I’ve been homeless two times not by my own doing – by life situations, crazy coincidences. In those times on the street, I have seen the lowest things you could possibly imagine – paedophiles, blood suckers, I know what this world is made of. It’s these things that motivate me to do charity work. I want to help people who have it even worse than I did. When I was younger, I got so stuck on thinking my life was so bad, lost in really dark moments – but as I get older, all I can think about is helping others. I think it comes with the happiness of still being alive.” – Jay Haze

And it’s this that leads us on to fabric 47, an incomparable mix that lends itself to the world, in more ways than one. In addition to donating a piece of himself to the music world, Jay Haze will also be donating all profits made from the mix to the rest of the world, specifically “The Democratic Republic of Congo. I work with different charities, and because fabric is a UK company, I wanted to honour that and do something in the UK, so I’m working with Merlin Health Services. What they do is really positive, and 95% of every dollar you give goes out into the field, and this is provable. Right now, they’re working in Congo, a country of 75 million people that’s been in civil war for 50 years. 1200 people die every day of simple things, preventable things, and it breaks my heart.” – Jay Haze

fabric_logo_2 fabric 47 is the deep, wandering heartbeat of 4/4’s most bold, valiant and versatile character; a bright, cohesive mix that is inherently Jay Haze through and through. Deeply-rooted in his free and capricious spirit, the flawlessly assembled collection of tracks thump with soul and alluring eccentricities. Grooving with an airtight flow across wide-ranging beats and styles, fabric 47 is a charismatic portrait of Jay Haze’s musical clan: the mix not only showcases the peerless artists he works with on his family of labels, as well as the many monikers that comprise Jay Haze, it’s also a glimpse into the soul-fuelled, future sound that they’ve collectively mastered. Teased throughout with samples from his Fuckpony track ‘Lady Judy’ (a song dedicated to our own fabric promoter, Judy Griffith – and a nod to the Daniel Bell classic, ‘Baby Judy’), he takes things dubbier with Alex Celler’s enchanting ‘Trapped In Dub’, trippier with the groove-laden ‘Mellow Dee’ (created with former studio partner Ricardo Villalobos in ’08), and epic with the penultimate Fuckpony track, ‘Burning’, fabric 47 is Jay Haze incarnate; deep, daring and brave. Seventy minutes in the company of this disc leaves you feeling edified and your faith in music’s brilliance renewed.

“I realized this mix was a great opportunity for me to put my people on, and it represents exactly what I stand for in this scene and my contribution. In the beginning I thought, should I put my own labels’ music on here? Is that too daft? But after some serious thinking, I really couldn’t be happier with the way it came together. I was able to get some of the core artists I work with to give me some exclusives, some yet to be released and even some edits of tracks I loved from their pasts. And I was able to combine it with a cause I believe is worth fighting for, so in a sense all the music I used brought my artists closer to me, and made them part of my experience. It’s a very personal mix” – Jay Haze

Kaiserdisco – Zapateria

kaiserdiscoasideMyBestFriend shows up once again, presenting for the 2nd time Kaiserdisco, a duo from Hamburg that has been very promising since their day one. Now, on their third Ep they came up with three pumpy tracks made to fulfill the dancefloor needs.  It all starts with “Espandrillo”, A1 track, a tech house tune with lots of energy and rhythm and a magnificent bassline… the vocals also fit in very well in a track that was made to make the audiences rave on! After this delightful track comes “Sandalia” with it’s neurotic acid elements and the blissful deep beats, the rhythm is again very intense and it’s another one that will cause huge effects at the floors! “Descalzo” ends up this unique Ep in a more sublime way, turned up to minimal flavors with it’s step by step rising construction. The bassline is also very linear, German style and the recycling of the 5, 6 samples used in the track is perfect! We sure support the three tracks but this is the one that more adapts to our standards.

Oliver Klein & Peter Jürgens – Let’s take it EP

After their hit with ‘Manolo/Scoville’ in 2008, they’re releasing an even better “double bomb” (yeah, they’re 2!), but we’ll add definition “triple bomb” cause every single track by itself is worthy of honors. Since Kling Klong is a imprint run by Martin Eyerer it’s not such a surprise this result, and information claim he liked so much the original “that nothing could stop him from adding a fantastic remix” and that’s really easy to understand.
coverIntroductions made, let’s go to what matters, the “triple bomb”. Needle down smooth and there you go to ‘Lets take it’, first track in the package. Well, they really will take a lot of dancefloors with this one! After listening two minutes of it, it’s only a simple detailed 4/4 track ‘till the point it reaches something new. Wow. Enters a bassline worthy of mention and you’re involved into a track that just keeps going on and on. Perfect construction, perfect alignment it’s all I can say. I can’t describe it better, it’s impossible. Hear the sample please!
Second track, Label boss remix of ‘Let’s take it’ (Martin Eyerer) is another masterpiece. Round and smooth it was almost perfect without the bassline, then you add the perfect texture bassline and.. you can see the result? Even if the remix goes more to introversion feelings, is one of those we like, always moving /seeming still, breaking/entering at the exact spots with the precise amount of details added in each one of them. This remix is a superb plus to the original track.
To end the package, surprisingly, its another masterpiece. ‘Der Spatz Auf Dem Dach’ its a uplifting track with arguments capable of convince even the most stuck person on a audience. Starts as a disguised sheep but transforms into a wolf when the bassline comes! Energizing by nature, lives on the hypnotic side, with such a level of details warped patterns and riffs that you only want more of this stuff. In a crowded club, with people asking for a peak, this is undoubtly the master peak, and as I describe it my legs are moving and I just wanna jump! What a track minimalanders!
This is the Ep we were claiming on the minimaland for a while. A superb production and a energizing texture are able to define one of the best releases we received this year to review so far. Round and uplifting, is one of those we strongly recommend you carry all the way, wherever you’re playing at. It’s difficult to create an Extended Play as this one, so captivating since the beginning ‘till the end, powdered with details and constructions/deconstructions that recycle each track to a new level when a break enters. We will not be surprised to see this release in the cases of those artists we follow more often. ‘Let’s take it’ will for sure take a lot of people into euphoric states this year. 8.5/10

Boris Brejcha – Commander Tom EP

post-37498-1242832437In the last year, 2008, we reviewed ‘Mein Wahres Ich’, produced by this German artist and released trough Harthouse Mannheim. A year has passed and he comes back to minimaland in a shorter Extended Play compared with last year’s magnificent release. ‘Commander Tom EP’ is again released in the Mannheim imprint since Boris has a parallel path trough Harthouse and Autist (Berlin) imprints. As follower of his work, I noticed some differences in this work, establishing the comparison, as e.g. a rhythm slow down, and a stripped down melody pushing the listener to a more minimal environment when playing the 12”. ‘Commander Town’, first track where my needle drops, is grooved in perfection by a constant bassline and paused where it should be, adding the patterns and sample games as it grows in exact moments of recycled harmony. As much as I hear it, is as much I’m pretty sure will be present around in this summer parties. ‘The Signal’ it’s a glimpse of his evolution onto pure minimal frequencies as well as extremely enjoyable on a dance floor, capable of moving those static and exquisite brains. It seems that the embedded message it transmits transports the listener to all the signals that surround and alert us, undoubtly a great achievement by Boris. Finishing, “Space Invaders” enters the space thematic (and remembers the game), directed to those souls who like to navigate on their own space world while absorbing rhythms of strong feeling. A well explored track in the electronic harmony paragraph, featuring those “space” synths. As evolves we notice that this partial constant melody advances into a fixed turning point, adding an interesting progression.
A must have!

Del Barrio Records – DBR005 review & FREE 320K Tracks!

Today I’m pretty interested in give readers more new names, releases and labels not so well known. And because we really like artists like e.g. Villalobos or Richie Hawtin or labels as good as e.g. Einmusik or Mobilee its always a pleasure to review or follow their works. However, the less known people and artists behind the “boom” of labels in the last couple years makes this a territory so vast that normally you get lost trying to find something fresh and good as well.
dbr005-cover-websmallSo, this was what happened, a fresh feeling, when we found (well, they found us,lol) Del Barrio Records, a young Madrid based label with promising tracks on their young luggage. Label is run by Carlos Elesbaan, aka Elesbaan and Jose Mondelo.
Because we don’t wanna be boring, here are the way they define themselves:
We want to offer a platform of free expression to all those who have something to say through electronic music.
Our intention and purpose is to give a honest, vivid reflection of what’s going on nowadays, never influenced or conditioned by any commercial guidelines…

So, promising as this couple paragraphs are, the work they developed is worthy of a visit trough Del Barrio Records Beatport Channel

So, to pleasure our readers and give a “push” to this Madrid quality young label (We don’t think we’ll push so much!), we’re offering two complete tracks from the #DBR005 (Estupenia and Pasculine), released in mid April and to prove their open-mindedness and their self-confidence in their work, the two tracks were choosen by us, really massive ones!

It may seems this is only promotion, but in fact the DBR005 quality of production surprised us and we really feel proud of our discovery and the work we done to give our readers a little “candy”. The bonus download packet includes ‘Pascualine ‘and ‘Extupeina’ and info such as the DBR005 newsletter. Because the newsletter of DBR005 haves a realistic detailed information about the release we will not make a review track-by-track, but instead give a glimpse on what’s going on.

The entire release combines itself in a very equilibrated way gathering different artists visions and feelings. Its composed of a general techno feeling, not forggeting the minimalistic sense and the love for detail. Even with all these premises, it doesn’t fall in a normal 4/4 pattern and is spiced up with details where tracks have different visions from the different artists who compose all the release. Del Barrio records, which can mean “From the suburb records” in Spanish, present us a great work and if we combine their youth and freshness we can consider this a great achievement. This label and the artists who form this release are names to be aware in next times. If they continue their work as in this DBR005, probably you’ll see more of them in many international artists cases. We’ll risk to say: From the barrio to the world!

Ercolino – Girls In a Tube Ep

Today we present an artist not so well known but with a certain history. Ercolino (Walter G. Ercolino) is one of those artists that work and you don’t notice him. The fact is that since he leaved a while production, on spaced hiatus, he managed to further develop the labels he started (Meerestief and Moonpool) and the one through this release is printed, Meerestief. As himself, away from the more “commercial” stuff, and with music running on his vains, he still released some eps trough not so well know labels, and a remix for one you must know, Freunde Tontraeger, subdivision of Ostgut Ton. As it seems Ercolino’s “Girls in a Tube E.P.” is the musically logical follow-up to the “Trapped in a rabbit hole” releases.
meeresdigi25-websmallAnd because we really like to support not so well know artists, and discover new faces, today we present you the upcoming work of Ercolino. So, the first track, ‘Girls In A Tube’ enters, in the universe of what we call electronic music, directly to the techno genre. Not that kind of techno always “hammering”, but with a great bunch of work and sounds that, combined together, make this track a natural born dancefloor killer. Progressive and embrancing, denotes a great work on the studio with constant changes and improvements, well, one of those tracks that make you sweat.
But proving his quality and that this is an artist who doesn’t fit an only pattern, comes ‘Tubular Girls’, proving his diversity. Calm and relaxed synths make a very enjoyable trip trough the tracks vibes, providing an harmonic feeling rare to hear. One of those tracks that start, make you enter its compass and harmony and suddenly finishes when you’re just asking for more of this feeling.
Connecting the loose ends, we can assure Ercolino’s work, with “Girls in a Tube” and “Tubular Girls”, two multilayered techno tracks in which he skillfully blends two different concepts, has a word to say in the upcoming times. Summer’s damage its already done!

Nick Curly – Pujante Ep

Here we don’t need to introduce anymore to mister Nick Curly. We follow is work for a few years and who want to collect more data on him can check the web or our search tool in the website.

nick-curly-pujante-coverWhen we have a Nick Curly release, either from himself or a remix where he put his hands on, or even a release on his label, it’s always an anctious belly feeling kicking around the minimaland. As precise as he can be, delivers a first ‘Pujante’, which in spanish means “Powerfull”. Well, it’s not so powerfull in the real sense of the word, but more kind of a masterpiece inside Curly’s world. A typical progressive track inside Nick style, layered with a pretty amount of details, enough to make you feel everything its connected in some way.. and it is! As always, an extreme sense of break on the track helps the construction and powerfull bassline keeps progressing the track up and up till a point where there’s no up or extreme discharge, only a good mood and a full enjoyment on all the frequences the track moves. ‘New Town Stranger’, second track on the Ep, really means an Extended play. It’s 12 min of “Cadenza”, where Nick shows why it’s such an amout of fuzzz around his name. Diversity is a word here, and if you can fit the first track on a growing mood, this one is more a reflexive minimal track, bpm’s down and spiced with incoming groove and details along the path combining a distorted voice, based on the classic house school, where the voice makes the history on the stranger. Well, he, Nick Curly, it’s not for sure a stranger on this land and this is probably why Sven Väth invited him not only to make an EP on Cocoon Recordings but also for a performance at the Cocoon night at super club Amnesia in Ibiza.

Maya Jane Coles – Monochrome Ep

Press:

“Dogmatik label returns in june with a brand new EP from one of the imprint’s leading lights, Maya Jane Coles. Coles’ previous releases ‘Sick Panda’ and the ‘Low Key EP’ have seen her garnering support from the likes of Thomas Schumacher, Audiofly, Ivan Smagghe and King Roc whilst her band ‘She is Danger’ is hotly tipped as one to watch.maya-jane-coles-dogmatik-websmall

First up we have title track ‘Monochrome’ a journey into deep, wonky territory, with skittering drum patterns, hypnotic vocals and a low bubbling bassline.
Next up is the excellent ‘She is Strange’ which takes the listener further down the dark and techy route with its pulsating electronic vibe and edgy melodic elements.
Following on we have Afrilounge’s take on the track ‘Colours’. The German trio, who have recorded for Connaisseur, Poker Flat and 8Bit, turn in a superb slice of tech house with a tight rhythm section and subtle building sonic layers. This is a mix that is sure to find favour across the dancefloors of Europe and beyond.
The penultimate piece is the original version of ‘Colours’, a wonderfully deep and engaging track that draws on simple sounds and rhythmic constructs to great effect. This is a warm and organic piece of house music that works a dancefloor.
Finally label boss Alex Arnout steps up to remix ‘She is Strange’ and delivers a great brooding piece of bass driven house with real depth and feeling, sterling stuff.”

Minimaland thoughts:

Maya Janes Cole, “Monochrome Ep”, is one of those records that creates his own space in your musical sense everytime you ear it. Generally, its everything except monochromatic since it comes around soft, progressive into a 4/4 beat that smoothly is spiced up with details, making it worthy of almost any electronic dj case, since it’s tracks spectrum of frequency fit almost any progressive mood. Worth to mention the quality of the remixes, as a great add-on to the Maya Janes Cole release, providing new looks upon. Afrilounge remix and the original “She was strange” are, under our consideration, the best tracks in the Ep, and surely will rock a lot of parties around this summer. In a 10/10 scale, this release is a 7.o. Maya Jane Coles, a name to follow in the next times as well as dogmatik.

Maya Jane Coles’ ‘Monochrome EP’ is released on Dogmatik in June 2009
