Andy Stott – Night Jewel

modernloveAndy Stott is one of those producers who has always captivate me. His music is totally different from what we normally listen, transmitting a very hypnotic vibe, surfing through waves between techno, house, dub, electro and IDM. His live acts must be quite amazing! Alongside with Claro Intelecto (a longtime friend, mentor and collaborator), they have been marking a generation on Modern Love with releases like “Warehouse sessions” or “Unknown Exceptions”. This release is a limited hand-stamped one-sided 12″ with only 500 copies for the world. “Night Jewel” is a classic dancefloor builder, amassing deadly ingredients on shuffling keys, a heaving square bassline and the kind of reverberating chords reminiscent of Move D at his most mesmerising. It’s surely one of the best records from Stott until this days, intuitive, imaginative, warm and hypnotic! “Night Jewel” is a required listening for any of you interested in the bass progressions and deviations where techno, house, dub, garate collide to shift things to next level..

Mr. Bizz – Karalis EP

karalisepToday we present to you two newcomers, the Sardinian brothers Fabrizio and Matteo Floris and their newest Ep released by one of the most promising labels in the electronic scene: Kammer Music. Karalis Ep has already been supported by Loco Dice, Karotte and Richie Hawtin and it is indeed a very good production. It all starts with “Black and White” a deep track filled by a heavy bassline and a great percussion. It’s a pure underground track, just like the Italians like to do it. Next comes “Fanfara”, a more aggressive tune, leaving the deep lines and moving in to minimal techno environments. It’s very similar to what Kreon & Lemos used to do in their beginning: pumpy bassline, intense rhythm and some jazzy melodies (in this case I think it’s a Saxophone) running the show and creating lots of enthusiasm. To end up this release comes “Zoom”, our favorite track here at the minimaland cause it’s the one that has all those ingredients that we like: step by step construction (each element entering one by one, anti-confusion), bassline leveled up to perfection and lot’s of spacy samples creating a kind of hypnotic atmosphere that all the dancefloors will appreciate. Massive! Release nr.8 on Kammer Music, a label to follow with attention.

Lee Jones – Yoyo EP

Cover_Yoyo_quer_500Following all this wonderful journey of Lee Jones, we can only conclude that his work is above a line followed by most artists. We can observe this fact if we listen to all his music so far, noticing that Lee Jones always allow us pleasant emotions, a great musical feeling letting anyone charmed by the beautiful musicality produced. Thus here we have another example of his professionalism called YOYO, edited by the recent Cityfox. The first single YOYO, is marked by its daring bass and a perfect rhythm with the adequate percussion within a dramatic melody, in turn, very catchy which is typical Lee Jones musical line. CLOSED CIRCUS is what we call minimal in its pure state. A good evolution of music, with the essential breaks giving the accurate vivacity to the music. Great deep for a cold late afternoon with the sun shining. BURGLARIZED is the last track on this release, and brings with it a feeling of some suspicion and fear, yet not wanting to sadden anyone, because right after is added a killer bass, giving the sign of high hopes and soul to us all. I strongly recommend to all lovers of this musical style.

Ytre Rymden Dansskola – Ytre Rymden Dansskola

FPCD03 CoverPrins Thomas’ Full Pupp label, in its short 3 year history, has become a leading light in Norway’s burgeoning electronic music culture. With its roots firmly imbedded in Oslo distinctive nu-disco scene it has been responsible for some of the most exciting music of recent years drawing on the sounds of Detroit techno, low slung house and of course cosmic disco. Now Full Pupp is set for the release of the label’s second artist album following on from the critically acclaimed debut from Blackbelt Andersen.
Ytre Rymden Dansskola are Marius Våreid and Jarle Bråthen a pair who have been fine tuning their sound since they appeared on the scene some years ago. They first came to light on Lindstrom and Prins Thomas Essential mix for BBC Radio1 a few years back and from there joined the Full Pupp family and saw their debut single for the imprint in 2007. The act name, though seemingly unpronounceable (at least to the English speaking tongue), apparently means ‘Outer Space Dance School’, an appropriate moniker for a pair who seem to have mastered the cosmic sound of the future.
This eponymously titled debut album is a real breath of fresh air in a world of samey electronic productions, Vareid and Brathen themselves describe their music as “deep sea diving-tropical island/cosmic/space/contemporary disco”, and they are not wrong, this is warm, engaging and slightly surreal in every sense.
From opening cut ‘1001 Natt’ with its unexpected time signature and hypnotic analogue synth work to the dub infused closer ‘Over Og Ut’ there is a rich diversity that keeps you hooked. Previous Full Pupp singles ‘Kjappfot’ with its wondrous deep house elements and ‘Afterski’ with its uplifting string stabs are certainly highlights, but there are no lulls in this albums sonic soundscape with each record bringing something new and inspiring to the table.
Full Pupp has set itself a hard task to follow after the acclaim surrounding its debut compilation and Daniel ‘Blackbelt’ Andersen’s incredible debut but with this superb album from Ytre Rymdem Dansskola it is clear that the depth of talent behind the Oslo imprint is not to be underestimated. And for every aspiring ‘nu-disco’ producer out there is would seem that there are lessons to be learned from the Outer Space Dance School.

Minimaland feedback: Not everything can be hard smashed up rough hard beats to the head! Sometimes old school sounds are essential, specially for the ones that have been enjoying dance music for as long as I do. 90’s nu deep disco house is back! Highly recommendable

Super Flu – Puma Okay

superflu1The German duo composed by Felix Thielemann & Mathias Schwarz is back, after a long a time of absence. It’s their 3rd Ep on Stephan Bodzin’s label Herzblut Recordings and, once again, Super Flu were able to create a production with very special music. In fact, this guys are able to create some of the most challenging tracks out there, their sound is completely distinguishable from the most of the producers and that’s some of the reasons of why we like this guys so much. The Ep starts with “Puma Okay” a minimalistic track, composed by four or five elements that keep getting in and off the track, it has an hypnotic melody and all the details seem to combine together perfectly. It’s not a monster track but it’s very seducing and I don’t have any doubts that it would be a hit in a morning after party! In the b-side “Bettvanille” presents a full-on minimal techno track with the typical 4×4 beat and step by step production, I really like this one, you’ll be shaking your head as soon as the track starts due to it’s great rhythm and flow. Super Flu did it again and we will be waiting for more to come…

Sebo K mixes Watergate 04

watergate04 artworkSituated by the river Spree, known for it’s first-rate lineups of international talent and of course it’s famous wall to wall LED dance floor installation, the Watergate Club in Berlin has quickly become one of the world’s leading dance music clubs. Only 5 years after it’s official opening the club now goes a step further and releases a characteristic Mix CD series delivering only the finest DJ Mixes by some of club’s most exiting residents and guests. With the focus being put not only on the music but also on the packaging and design, this series will quickly become a truly sought-after collectors item and will surely stand out in flood of mediocre music and mixes that often dilute the market.

Sebo K has long been a key figure in Berlin’s music community, starting his DJ career in the early 90s at Alec Empire’s Bass Terror nights, Berlin’s first UK-style breakbeat parties. By the mid 90s he had discovered his love for Chicago house and Detroit techno – a passion evident to anyone who has heard the vintage depths many of his tracks nod to – and at the turn of the decade began playing regularly at legendary clubs throughout Berlin. Now he’s becoming an unstoppable force in the electronic music scene. One of his first tracks for Mobilee, “Rancho Relaxo” was an instant classic, establishing Sebo as an up-and-coming act worthy of extreme attention. To declare that Sebo has lived up to expectations would be an understatement to say the least.

Minimaland Feedback: One of the best Watergate mixes till now (along with Sascha Funke), Sebo K didn’t relaxed in his performance, it has a little bit of everything: mixing skills are near perfection, great selection of tracks (including a couple of unreleased edits) creating a nice mood on a cd that it’s worth to buy. The artwork keeps it’s originality… Watergate mixes are here to stay.

The Cheapers – White Hole

uponyou28After a long time of absence the duo composed by Fraenzen Texas & Ruede Hagelstein is back to Upon You to present the “White Hole”, a documentation of a time when The Cheapers were together in a dark vault and they were only attending the on going outer world through a white hole. Apart from this strange story I’m glad to say that this is maybe the best release of Upon You during 2009. The Ep begins with a massive “Disorder” able to cause some serious damage into your limbic system due to an intoxicating melody combined with a rough 4×4 beat and a serious bass line. It’s everything you can demand on a dancefloor and it has been supported by some of the most known Dj’s out there like Monika Kruse, Mark Henning or Mike Monday. B1 goes more deep and minimal and it’s carried by amazing chords that give a great sense of appeal to the music. After some subtleness the heavy charges come back in “white Hole”, a track with some weird vocals that give an obscure environment to it. The chords appear again, this time in hypnotic mode and the bassline is really captivating. When I listen this track it’s like The Cheapers are telling me a story and that’s something that I appreciate in music. Release nr.28 on Upon You, their best in a while.

John Shananigans – The Man With One Blue Shoe

johnshananingasIn less than one month Circus Company is back to minimaland… Our previous post about the label featured their incredible compilation “Snuggle & Slap” and now they get back on top form for a very interesting work. John Shananigans is one of the alias of mr Mike Shannon, respected Canadian dj and producer, where he presents another side of his personality, turned up to refined modern minimal beats. In fact, if you’re looking for fresh innovative tunes that makes you dance with no hesitation, you have to buy this Ep… In the a-side you will listen a very funky tune composed by those standard 808 kick interlaced with some metalic snares that makes you pump even if you’re in the middle of a conversation. In the b-side the pumpy flow continues with “Bounce The Blues” a great funky tech track with another amazing conjugation between beat and snares. A highly futuristic release with those kind of  grooves that no one will be indifferent to. Supported by Adultnapper, Tiefschwarz, Anja Schneider, dop, Ernesto Ferreyra, Guillaume & The Coutu Dumonts, Karotte, Sebo K, Mathias Kaden, Nick Hoppner, John Tejada, Loco Dice, Seuil, Will Saul and Luciano.

Fuckpony – Let The Love Flow

fuckpony500Jay Haze – homme fatale, madman, exceptionally gifted composer and producer, owner of labels TuningSpork and Contexterrior, and mastermind behind numerous other musical projects – has done it again. The big surprise. Something no on expected. After two singles (plus remixes for Telefon Tel Aviv and Kiki), Jay brings Fuckpony back to the BPitch stable, offering a full-length album with intentions no less than world dominance. Sure, house music has always been king, but even if (as these days) some poser waiting around the corner claims his name is Jack, the subtlytrained ear can hear the difference, and the wheat is separated from the chaff. And instead of coasting comfortably off the success of his recent Fabric47 mix CD, Jay strikes again with what may be his most mature, cohesive artistic statement yet.

Hardly anyone knows the legacy of American-style house as Mr. Haze does. Despite a sense of tradition, this guy’s intention was never just to reproduce a well-known sound. His nonconformist principle has always been a recurring theme throughout his diverse projects as he crosses given boundaries. Futurism as a conceptual basis and Chicago as grammar, but even a bit more special than what is currently being rehashed with these ideas. And what Jay as Fuckpony has always excelled at is opening up to – what one would call commonly and from a distance – “pop”. Pop in the best sense, though: as an abstraction of accessibility, one that strikes your cheek gently while scraping stubble.
The slightly shifted, forward-driven syncopation in the title track “Let The Love Flow” would be a prime example. Angular, sharp-edged pop, on whose surface you could light a match – so much soul is pushing through that the dancefloor seems like it is about to collapse. But it won’t, because “Let the Love Flow” doesn’t become a pure dance album, at least not in its entirety. Instead Haze meanders into a strange realm somewhere between the gleam of Saturday night (like in the track “Orgasm On The Dancefloor Saturday Night”) and the pale daylight of a Sunday morning (as in “A Pill’s Medley”). The listening experience provides a sort of afterhours party for lovers, only that here the sweet taste of the club never dissolves away from the tongue. Everything stays positive here: despite the high altitude, Fuckpony lands in the crate softer than ever, with house tracks that resurrect old feelings, but despite all the grace and emotion, kick sharply with a super-tight bass drum. A collection of small epics that are never for a second flat or cheesy, despite their catchiness.

Because this album seems to be so sentimental and tender, it almost sounds as if Jay Haze has discovered his feminine side on BPitch Control. You could call it house with heart, an entire album without samples, made from scratch with his own two hands. The horns, the drums, and of course the dominating piano – all of these emanate from the mad spirit of the master, sustaining his genius, his unmistakable handwriting ever present. Only the vocals in “Fall Into Me” and “I Know It Happened” are not sung by Haze himself, but rather by Laila Tov and Chela Simon. The latter has already lent her voice to Kiki’s “Good Voodoo”, and her contributions to this album offer a few soulful moments, instantly making your arm hairs stand on end. Yes, it comes full circle- Fuckpony’s long-player for ravers in love and for raved out lovers who are still going long after peak time. A self-contained album with powerful melodic arches and a great dramatic underscoring of house, embedded in tradition but not dwelling on the past. Ten tracks, each unique and self-sufficient, held together through love: the love of music, of house, of Berlin, of parties, of all of you out there. So in this sense, love it also! Real love is forever…

Minimaland Feedback: If you’re a Jay Haze appreciator than you got to have this album. As it says in the press release, this album really is the other side of mr. Haze, his most tender one. The Cd is great, all the track are quite good and all of them run through deep environments. This is not dancefloor directed, it could easily be played in an after-hours session as it could be featured as the soundtrack of a movie. One after another, the tracks seem to complete each other. I’ve always liked this Fuckpony experience and this release add’s the full guarantee that this project is here to stay for many and many years.

Perc – Mathlete

mathleteThe 200th edition on Ovum Recordings couldn’t be forgotten by minimaland! The label founded by Josh Wink, back in 1994, is here to stay and this release is just another proof of that statement. Uk producer Ali Wells aka Perc was the producer invited for this special release and, as a key figure in the global techno scene, his delivery couldn’t be better. “Mathlete” is a great piece of rough underground minimal techno, as high and dry as you could get.
“Mathlete”, the first track of the Ep is pure straight techno with a 4 x 4 beat, a dark bassline and a couple of loops that seem to be feeding the beat along the music. This remind me a lot Richie Hawtin first productions. “Throb” follows the techno meltdown of the first. It’s my favorite pearl of this release… it starts with a dry beat and then some metallic snares and simple loops go entering one by one building a perfect industrial soundscape. Last but not the least comes the powerful “Math Beat” following the paths of the previous ones. A release to have and to be played in the best sound systems around the world. Played by Richie Hawtin, Dubfire, Stefan Goldman and Sven Vath.
