Phil Kieran – Shh

Cover_phil_kieranPhil Kieran has been in the upper echelons of the electronic music game for more than a decade, but is only now releasing his debut album under his own name. Known for rocking clubs and releasing a string of killer twelves, Belfast-based Phil has hooked up with German powerhouse Cocoon in recent times. Sven Väth‘s label is now about to release “Shh”, a groundbreaking piece of work that will undoubtedly gain Phil plaudits across the board.

“Shh” seems to not only reference every sound Phil has ever loved in music, but is formulated in a completely fresh and futuristic way. Listen carefully and you can detect elements of dub reggae, old hardcore like LFO, hip-hop, early 90s electronica such as Autechre/Black Dog and other Warp staples, as well as the futuristic techno that Phil excels in. For the album Phil went back to old sound lab recordings dating back to the 1950s and 60s. Utilising some of these sounds in the initial construction, he built up tracks using a combination of old samples sourced from original and weird places and some live new instrumentation as well. There are live drums, some electric/acoustic/bass guitar and live keyboard playing as well as some choice guest vocalists.

“I tried to use all my knowledge from when I first got into music to try and make an album that captures everything I‘ve ever loved about music,” Phil says. Phil has synthesized his myriad of influences into one radically beautiful whole: blissed-out vocal samples, space age electro, cavernous bleeps, fizzy technoid 4/4 beats, glistening glitches, crackers crackles, early R&S sounds, warm keys, acerbic bassline undertows, dense echoes, Orbital cinematics and randy robotics all feature, but really this is an album far greater than the sum of its parts. It‘s very much a home or car listening album, perfect for post-club play, although plenty of the individual tracks contain discerning dancefloor dynamics too.

Cutting his clubbing teeth at Shine in Belfast, Phil now has over 100 dancefloor releases to his name on quality labels like Skint, Soma and NovaMute, and is widely respected throughout the industry among the technoscenti. He‘s also recently broken into movie scoring, creating the soundtrack for recent Steven Soderbergh film The Girlfriend Experience with fellow Irish compatriot David Holmes. To exorcise some demons a few years ago he created a live techno punk band Alloy Mental, variously melding Joy Division basslines onto pummeling punky T.Raumschmiere-style technoid power-drivers. He also has an impeccable DJ rep that‘s won him placings in DJ magazine‘s global Top 100 DJs poll, and a guarantee to promoters that he‘ll inevitably rock the joint to its foundations. But now Phil has just entered the next phase in his career. „Shh“ won‘t be a secret for long: it‘s almost certain to take its place amongst not only the albums of the year, but as one of the landmark releases of the last two decades.

Minimaland Feedback: After Extrawelt’s album Cocoon comes back with another great piece. Along the 12 tracks Phil Kieran is able to create a lot of different dimensions and environments showing all his quality as a producer. Tracks like “Dirt” (perfect mnml techno turn-on), “Raining For Old Friends” (Lawrence style) or Never Ending Mountain (great melody, it feels like you’re flying…) show all his potential as a producer and ultimately as an artist! This is a big surprise for me, I wasn’t expecting so much from this album, it’s in my top5 of the year for sure! Strongly recommended…

Circus Company – Snuggle & Slap

circs300xCelebrating 10 years of refining its highly personal vision of underground electronic dance music, Paris’ Circus Company presents Snuggle & Slap, a two-CD compilation balancing contemporary house music with more idiosyncratic submissions. It’s more than just a label sampler: many of the artists included here appear two or even three times, having been afforded the opportunity to think beyond the dance floor and experiment with new sounds, unusual styles, and secret passions.

Hushed funk, feathery beats and spongy textures characterize Snuggle, while Slap snaps to attention with more insistent grooves straight to the heart of the label’s sweet spot: sumptuously detailed, swoon worthily deep house. Whether you’ve been following Circus Company for the whole decade or are only just now turning on, this collection of new, exclusive material is an essential portrait of one of the most dynamic labels around.

Who’s on board? There are veterans from the label’s very earliest days, including Ark, Nôze, Dave Aju and Sety. There are folks that have joined in recent years, enlarging the label’s sound along with its roster: dOP, MyMy, Guillaume & the Coutu Dumonts, Audio Werner, Antislash, Oleg Poliakov, Le K. And finally there are the most recent freaks to join the Circus: Berlin resident Ryan Crosson, New York’s Wolf Lamb-affiliated Nicolas Jaar, and the German jazz/soul band Homewreckers.

Circus Company’s Mathias Duchemin (aka Sety) sums up the project: “The concept of this compilation with to present our artists’ hidden sides. On the Slap side you’ll get their usual, dancefloor-oriented style. On the Snuggle side you’ll have the chance to discover their more ‘home listening’ directions. Nowadays, I have the feeling that labels are neglecting the non dance side.”

The best thing about Snuggle & Slap is the way the tracks fall into conversation with one another. Like pictures at an exhibition, each reflects upon the next, with complementary sounds and recurring themes coming together into a whole that’s far more than the sum of its parts.

Release Date: 24.10.2009

Minimaland Feedback: During 10 years Circus Company has been one of the major labels of Paris. They’ve introduced several important artists from that city like Noze, Ark, Cabanne, dOP and many more. Circus Company isn’t about a scene, or even a sound. It’s about a kind of spirit, and those who feel it, get it. And this release is all about that spirit, for this they’ve integrated another producers that are very familiar to them like My My, Guilaume & The Coutu Dumonts, Daje Ave or Audio Werner and the result couldn’t be better: two funky cd’s full of ideas and personality and good producers. I can almost say that this is too much good music in only one package. Don’t count on pumpy techno, this is some of the most exquisite minimal out there, in an old school label that deserves lots of respect! Modern dance music is alive!

Taron-Trekka – Artys Lisii

tarontrekkaEvery time I listen a new Freude Am Tanzen EP I know I’m going to have access to very good productions, carefully chosen to seduce the real music appreciators. This one is it’s perfect example. “Artys Iisii” is not rough material only done to pump out the dancefloors, on the contrary, this are productions that captivate the people by it’s simplicity and minimal know how. Taron Trekka is a duo composed by Daniel Muller-Saschs (D.M.S.) and Andreas Kriester (Crisder) and they are the producers of this tremendous peace of Art! The Ep starts with “Shirol”, a hypnotic track that goes tumbling around a voice saying “Don’t have done my part”, this one really starts to show it’s personality by the 3rd minute, when a really good bassline appears carried by huge snares and great hit-hats. The breaks and the following recycling of the track was perfectly built in this one. Next comes “Krasse & Zick” with some carefully chosen samples, full of messy horns and organ sounds that provide this one a melodic sense that will have a great success in a bar or an after, after-hours session. It feels like you’re listening to a live concert. Music to chat while you’re listening it… Ending this Ep comes “Stock Dich Quer” a little melancholic but with all the mnml standard patterns of production, very nice bassline, great snares and a twisted hypnotic vibe just as we like it around here. To be played at a club, bar or simply at home. I really recommend you to listen this one, it won’t turn you mad, but it’s very good material that can only be done by top producers that have a complete knowledge of what dance music is and what are the most important points that it should have and never forget! Not to miss…

Oddvar – For Lovers

sportclub21artworkThe name Oddvar might be unknown to many of you but if you like good music you should definately listen all of his releases. The first one “Country Side EP”, released on Kammer Music has received very good critics all over the dance music industry and it was played for several months by Djs like Guido Schneider, Marco Resmann, Tom Clark and Jens Bond. The Berlin producer always presents very good percussive minimal house always with some hypnotic textures and this release follow’s that same rule, and aside from Djing and producing he was one of the guys who helped to create Traktor Dj Software!
This Ep that will be released on Alex Bartsch’s SportClub Music label comes with four tracks where all you can feel the influence of the Berlin’s music scene, all of them are very good produced and each one passes different vibes to the people, so you won’t get bothered by this one certainly! “Love Me” has a great rhythm and a very good groove and it was already supported by Channel X and Someone Else. “Slave To the Bar” doesn’t get as groovy but it as a growing pattern that no one will be indifferent to. “Without You” is one of those classic disco house tracks with really nice oldschool voices. We like it a lot around here cause you can remember the great old days with this one. Finally comes “The Secret” that was done with the collaboration of Jens Bond. It is a monster track that will fit perfectly in every dancefloor. It’s deep and minimal, it has a great flow and a very good pumpy feeling! Safe one! Already Supported by Luciano, Hot Chip, President Bongo, Marco Resmann, Italoboyz, Someone Else, Channel X and Philip Sherburne (Pitchfork/The Wire/XLR8R)

1. Love Me

3. Without You
