Contorted – Adrenalin

CS1547157-02A-BIGMalatoid Records has been one of my favourite labels of last year. Their releases are all very edgy, never sticking to the basics and that’s a quality I like on them. So today I’m here to share with you their last EP, released by the Italian producer Contorted. “Adrenalin” is composed by two tool tracks that will be sure values in every dancefloor. The first track shares the same name of the release and it’s a freaky and disturbed one. It carries a really weird and dark vibe with it, it has a melting sound over the beat and when the acid stuff comes the things start to get really hot! It’s the kind of tool that I can imagine Mr. Hawtin would appreciate to his new Plastikman set’s. The 2nd track is “Lost” and I must say that this bomb is the main reason of my post, it has a great groove, a beautiful mnml techno construction pattern and it’s dark as hell so I guess night crowds will love it. Malatoid is one of the labels that all of us should follow during 2010, so stay tunned

Balance 016 by Agoria

After raising the bar to unprecedented heights in 2009 with Joris Voorn and Will Saul’s stunning additions to the series, EQ Recordings’ Balance series returns for the new decade with yet another standard-setting mix from one of the most sophisticated and inspiring names in techno: Agoria.

osu39zThe man otherwise known as Sebastien Devaud wasn’t bitten by the dance music bug until he was out of his teens, but once he began hunting imported 12”s from the US and Germany in his native France, there was no turning back. His production career began in 1999, with his debut album Blossom and first compilation following in 2003 – and it was clear even in those early days that a serious new talent was emerging. Blending the throb and groove of deeper, stripped-back techno with a keen sense of musicality, emotion and atmosphere, his is a sound that transcends beyond mere dancefloor disposability.

Agoria explains his intention for this intricate compilation: “The concept of both CDs is all about balance. Literally. In my mind a balance is not a middle position; it’s a perfect equilibrium. I’m trying to be as close as possible to this idea. I have tried to find this fine line where the balance is just right.” To accomplish this perfectly-weighted contrast, he’s cherry-picked from a myriad of genres and subgenres in his “beat open-minded” fashion, combining a wealth of material from newcomers across the spectrum (including no less than 12 exclusives) with more established producers, classics and unknown gems from his broad musical past, and put it all together in an unconventional, challenging manner. “In the end, more than a DJ compilation, this is a manifesto of my passion for music and for mixing” he explains.

Disc 1 casts Agoria not simply as a functional dancefloor engineer, but as a musical craftsman, an arranger, a conductor. It’s the sound DJing evolved – the art of composition, contrast and texture, toying with your emotion and patience and pushing and pulling your attention in different directions. We begin all beatless and atmospheric, moving through the Viennese downtempo beauty of Tosca and the haunting acoustic pop of Emiliana Torrini and onwards into Agoria’s own blend of operatics and deep electronica on Altre Voci. Glimpse’s Train In Austria Pt.2 catches us off guard with its intense emotion, before the helmsman ushers us unexpectedly towards organic instrumentation and disco grooves, all warm and familiar after the heady electronics that went before. A delicate, blessed-out climax lays the mix down to rest.

agoria1Disc 2 sees Agoria go for the 4/4 jugular, with more of the trademark sound that he is recognised for. But it’s not quite as simple as that. Even more so than on the first mix, he combines and sequences tracks in every different way, splicing several together, reintroducing the same track twice or four times, comparing and contrasting different flavours. “I thought that to find the right balance, I needed to use all the ways of mixing. Editing tracks but also letting entire tracks play. Playing 3 or 4 times the same tracks, or spinning some for just a few seconds. Loopy or not. Exclusive, classic or covers, bizarre or easy listening, happy or trippy. 4 tracks together or just one. Loosing the listener for a minute to re-catch him the minute after. Spinning a classical music work of Jonny Greenwood at the peak time. Going up and then down. Starting and finishing with the same tracks.” Familiar names like Marc Antona, Chris Carrier and Mark Broom supply a steady throb of techno and tech house rhythms – melody percolating the mix at the right moments – leading up to a dreamy, euphoric climax, laden with the joyous pianos of Serge Santiago’s re-rub of Shit Robot and Martyn’s heavenly reworking of Efdemin. Two sumptuous vocal tracks round off this incredible oeuvre, the perfect finale to bring the mix back down to earth after some epic peaks.

This superb compilation is as deep and rewarding as a well-woven novel, the dénouement of the story unfolding as the mix evolves through Agoria’s musical DNA. Yet another essential addition to the compilation series that is fast becoming the new benchmark for ambitious DJs and demanding listeners alike.

Kaiserdisco – The Early Bird EP

CS381977-01A-BIGFrederic Berger & Patrick Buck aka Kaiserdisco have been in my top producers over the last year! Why? Well, two reasons, the first is that most of their releases are smashing hot and the second is because they only release like three or four Ep’s per year, not flooding the market with more music than they should,  like so many artists do. Their first release in december 2008 topped beatport charts for over a month and earned them a place in the beatport top selling minimal tracks of 2008, as well as the rapt attention and support of Len Faki, Technasia, Laurent garnier, Dubfire and Monika Kruse and since that moment they became one of the most spread acts through the sets of the greatest guys out there. Today I present to you their Early Bird Ep, released by Terminal EM, containing three pumping tracks to amuse the dancefloors. The first one is “Dark Orbit” a techno monster very well built, always rising up around itself that will surely lead the crowds to get wildly insane. A real buzz in the head! Next comes “The Early Bird”, not as euphoric as the first, but with a more minimal sense appeal. It’s definitely the one that most adapts to our musical style, deep groove, warm synth and great sound textures. Ending up the release comes “Smoke City” with lots of big claps and grooving bass keeping the feeling of the previous one. A must have ep, demanding us all to dance! Trully advised!

Plastikman 2010

Richie Hawtin returns with one of the most referenced electronic music monikers in dance music… PLASTIKMAN.

Plastikman_4

Hawtin will unleash a live electronic performance that takes his mastery of technology to the next level, incorporating state of the art visual architecture, interactive technology, and more to be revealed in this return of one of the founders of modern electronic music. Plastikman Live will be debuted at this year’s Timewarp festival on March 27th, 2010 – the first in a series of hand-picked dates that will form the first ever Plastikman Live world tour.
The new show evolves from the previous Plastikman live performance at Canada’s Mutek festival in 2004, by continuing to explore the connection between visual, audio and interactivity, and once again partnering visual architects Derivative alongside visual designer Ali Demirel. Building upon everything learned from the Hawtin/Demirel Timewarp shows of 2005-2007 and 2008’s Contakt multimedia events, Plastikman Live condenses all of these elements into a new highly concentrated one-hour experience. Reinterpreting the 18 year history of Hawtin’s Plastikman material, Plastikman Live moves from the acidic atmospheres of ‘Sheet One’ to the disorienting funk of ‘Musik’, to the nostalgic moments of ‘Artifakts’, through the depths of ‘Consumed’ and into the darkness of ‘Closer’; everything re-imagined through the capabilities of modern technology.
Recapturing the spirit of the early Plastikman albums and parties in Detroit, Plastikman Live is a fusion of the past and future, the visual and audible, between performer and audience, of expectations and anticipation; creating the ultimate Plastikman experience.

“It has always fascinated me how sound, lighting, visuals and human interactivity define and deepen a concert experience. By focusing on my own unique Plastikman sound I hope to find new freedom and explore the extremes of where these elements converge, challenging our senses, stimulating our memories and creating an experience of physical and mental intensity that can be only Plastikman.
Richie Hawtin, January 2010

Ryan Crosson & Guti – You’ve Got Me

CS384119-01A-BIGGuy Gerbers’ “Supplement Facts Records” is proud to present “You’ve Got Me EP” by Ryan Crosson & Guti – (SFR018). “You’ve Got Me EP” carries two original mixes by the dazzling artist duo. The release marks the debut for both on “Supplement Facts Records” and we are ecstatic to welcome them to our family of artists. The inspiration for this release for Ryan & Guti came from Guy Gerbers’ trademark sounds and musical vibe, which naturally melts this record into Supplement Facts’ catalogue. The artists Ryan Crosson and Guti individually represent exactly the contemporary approach to electronic music production and performance that “Supplement Facts” aims for and cherishes. To have them team up for this release means a particular honor for us! The tracks don’t only fit into the labels repertoire superbly, but also enclose a unique mood created by sensitive melodies, thick beat lines and a superb vocal performance on “You’ve Got Me” featuring “Don Fuego”. The title track “You’ve Got Me” nourishes of the poignant vocal line that really ties the track together. The second title “Marimbaby” bears a funky latino influenced groove. Both productions build up to a solid groove that makes them equally as useful on the dance floor.

Julian Jeweil – Color

CS1541092-02A-BIGThe French Julian Jeweil is still a rookie in the music production scene, he started a few years ago with some releases on Skryptom Records and had a famous big track that was compiled in a couple of mixed cd’s named “Air Conditionne” and now he seems to have found his own way with his biggest achievement until this date – this release on Sven Vath’s label Cocoon Recordings. “Color EP” should be listened by all of you, specially if you like those powerful tracks that normally create mass euphoric moments in the dancefloors. This Ep is all about that, 3 non stopping tracks created to boost up the crowd’s energy. All of them are pretty equal, starting with a step by step construction and always rising the levels during the track. It’s one of the best Ep’s I’ve listened in Cocoon Recordings for some time with a producer that you all should pay some attention cause I guess that, from now on, there is no stopping for this guy!

Mendo – Encantos EP

encantosCadenza Records was founded by Luciano and Serafin a couple of years ago and since the beginning they’ve always had a great roster featuring their releases. Despite this they’ve been adding a couple of guys to their crew over the years and, to names like Villalobos, Luciano, Digitaline and others, they’ve added others like Mirko Loko, Petre Inspirescu and Mendo in the most recent years. Today we are here to talk about Mendo and his newest release “Encantos EP”. As these two certified burners prove, back-to-basics house music is alive and thriving. And while hes been around the block a time or two, this essential double-A-side release confirms Mendos status as an artist on the rise. He is one of those guys that creates tremendous grooves and I really think that he is the proof that Cadenza style is here to stay and to ensure quality above all. This release urges for Summer party’s so let’s hope the sunny days show up to end this rigged Winter season.
