Dinky – Anemik

dinky 300pxFollowing up on her unanimously acclaimed third album ‘ May Be Later’ (Vakant), Chilean artist and Berlin transplant Alejandra Iglesias conceived ‘Anemik’ entirely for the Wagon Repair label after being approached by label head Mathew Jonson. A musing on femininity and the fine line between romance and delirium, ‘Anemik’ transcends borders in its range of influence and reflects consciousness in the fluidity and tangibly live origins of its creation. Recorded using analog equipment and acoustic instruments with a strong emphasis on voice, there is a wisdom and maturity to this work that suggests an artist in the prime of her life.

Opener ‘Childish’ builds from meditative beginnings with looped synth, wandering pads and wildfire percussive cycles that concoct a deep and dreamy landscape. ‘Romaniks’ creates space between electronic and acoustic spheres with Latin soaked beats encircling a subdued kick. Mantric vocal chants inject a mystical dimension to the affair, its psychedelic overtones continuing into ‘Westoid’, where Dinky’s vocal lament is complimented by the baritone accents of Los Updates enigmatic Jorge Gonzales. ‘Gold Fishes’ bubbles into being with processed choral scales, while ‘Rain Fallic’ is a mid tempo trip of lazy legato harmonies and epic Telecaster drones. Title track ‘Anemik’ is a restless electronic frenzy, with melodic and percussive elements feuding amidst staccato vocals, effervescent machine transmissions and a penetrating central kick.

‘Glacial’ opens with an aquatic brew of reverberant vocals and deep percussion that swims through murky pads and delayed keys to close. ‘Ceramik’ weaves a tight beat, with warm Rhodes accompaniment, live percussion and ramped vocal passages concocting a mesmeric floor worker for the early hours. A perfect example of the fluid, jam infused tone of the album as a whole.
Thumbed melodic patterns and sonorous key stabs characterize ‘Glassic’, while ‘Skyped’ intertwines grandiose processed chorals, deep metallic percussion and leveling pads in a hypnotic malaise of storm and sweat.

The infectious arpeggiated melodies of ‘Epilepsia’ are invigorated by live Latin percussion and intermittently cooled by warm pad progressions in a contemplative ascent to close. ‘Fadik’ grips as a wonky love song set to cascading beats, strummed guitar and electronic emissions, while closing track ‘Nocturnal’ unsettles with moribund ambient shivers to complete the kaleidoscopic range of flavors and emotions offered by this most remarkable of records.

At times dreamy, at times nightmarish, at times romantic, at times befuddled, ‘Anemik’ is always quintessentially Dinky.

Steve Bug – The Lab 02

LAB002s-coverWith the first instalment of “The Lab” from Loco Dice receiving critical acclaim, it’s no surprise that for ˚2 the prestigious NRK imprint have drafted in Steve Bug, arguably one of the finest and most innovative underground DJs in the world.

With a career which has seen him excel as a DJ, Producer, A&R and Label Manager, Bug has always been on point and this mix is no different. Having started his career, quite aptly on the party isle of Ibiza, back in 1991, the man known to his parents as Stefan Brugesch broke into production in the early 90s, recording for the now legendary Hamburg based Superstition Recordings. A string of early releases (including one for Felix Da Housecat’s fledgling Radikal Fear label), shaped the ‘Steve Bug’ sound of minimal tech house aimed squarely at the dancefloor. By 1998, Bug had set up two record labels to reflect the wealth of talent in his musical circles, Poker Flat Recordings and Dessous.

Now, in 2009 and fresh from releasing his “Collaboratory” long player earlier this year, Bug returns to the decks to deliver 2 discs of house music as only he can. Taking in the length and breadth of contemporary house, the mixes are programmed in a way that screams Bug.

From the opening melodies of Ostgut man Nick Hoeppner via the low down grooves of Londoner Kevin Griffiths, CD1 is a fluid succession of electronic deep house cuts with an emphasis on melody and variation. From the revivalist feel of Kai Alice feat. Azulu Panton’s “Power Thru 3” and Rocco’s “The Man” to the futurist funk of Berkson and What’s “Cycles”, the transitions are smooth and the overview warm before culminating in the warped funk of Kiki’s “Good Voodoo”.

steve-bugCD2 develops things wonderfully, picking up from CD1’s deep vibe and adding an angular, peak time edge to the mix. Opener “The Soul Part 2” by Craig Smith on the fledgling imprint Delusions of Grandeur sums this transition up perfectly with its warm outlook spiked by a bubbling acid bassline. Nagging and hypnotic, the mix remains heads down but resolutely compelling with DJ Koze’s remix of Blagger on Perspectiv, Art Of Tones’ “Call The Shots” and Cobblestone Jazz’s “Traffic Jam” providing forward thinking highlights.

The Lab 02 further cements the reputation of one of electronic music’s best love sons whilst establishing this compilation series as a must have for music fans everywhere

Luciano – Tribute To The Sun

647 t’s been nine years since Lucien Nicolet’s first record, and in that time he has earned his place among electronic dance music’s most celebrated names. He’s racked up singles for the likes of Mental Groove, Perlon, Desolat and of course Cadenza. He’s remixed everyone from M83 to Salif Keita, and his mix CDs for Fabric and Soma’s Sci.Fi.Hi.Fi. series have showcased minimal house and techno at their most sensual, supple and jubilant. And Luciano’s DJ sets have become the stuff of legend the world over.

Throughout his career, the Swiss-Chilean musician has experimented liberally with longer formats, including a live album for Thomas Brinkmann’s max.Ernst label and 2004’s groundbreaking No Model No Tool, a recombinant set of groove components. But in all this time he has released only one proper studio album, 2004’s Blind Behaviour, which veered away from the dancefloor in search of more esoteric pleasures. At long last, with Tribute to the Sun, Luciano delivers one of the definitive highlights of his career.

Not merely a “dance” or “electronic” record, Tribute incorporates musical styles from around the globe with Luciano’s inimitable rhythmic sensibility. It draws upon Luciano’s extensive experience as a mover of bodies and a reader of the crowd’s mind. Many of its grooves form an integral part of Luciano’s DJ sets, having been road-tested and continually refined. But it’s very much an album to be listened to front to back. (Most of the album’s cuts will also be made available as extended edits, for vinyl and download alike.)

Tribute to the Sun is above all a highly personal portrait of the artist. Informed by the ups and downs of the artist’s life, and the balancing act between life on the road and the refuge of family life in rural Switzerland, its moods run from the heavenly grace of “Celestial” to the outright madness of “Metodisma.” This is the fullest portrait yet of Luciano as not just an artist but a human being.

Four years in the making, the album finds Luciano collaborating with a cast of musicians as talented as they are diverse. Martina Topley-Bird, of course, is known for her haunting contributions to Tricky’s early classics, as well as for her solo career and collaborations with the likes of Danger Mouse and Mike Patton. Senegal’s Ali Boulo Santo, heir to a long line of griots and nephew of the legendary “King of the Kora” Soundioulou Cissoko, was said to be “born with a Kora in his hands”; he pioneered an electronic fusion of Mandingue Afrobeat in his recordings for Frédéric Galliano’s Frikyiwa label, and here his contributions continue to expand the possibilities for “world” music in new contexts. Switzerland’s Bruno Bieri is the inventor of the Hang, a kind of steel drum with a sound like a mountain stream; “Hang for Bruno” features both his limpid melodies and the contributions of the Israeli percussionist Omri Hason, a student of the Iranian master Djamchid Chemirani. Omri Is also part of Luciano’s live project Aether Nation.

cadenza“Los Niños de Fuera”: Fusing tribal singing and nimble handclap patterns with the flickering rhythms and walking basslines he does best, this is dizzyingly gleeful stuff—albeit shot through with sliding, melancholy harmonies—that balances innocence with intensity.”Celestial”: Sampling a portion of the singer-songwriter Keren Ann’s song “Liberty,” Luciano concocts a heady, heavenly song that builds and builds so gently, you’ll never notice your feet leaving the ground.”Sun, Day and Night”: Martina Topley-Bird’s voice nestles in a nest woven from coppery strands. Freeing himself from the tyranny of the 4/4 kick, Luciano explores rippling polyrhythms and basslines that rise to the surface like an underground spring. “Conspirer”: Contemplative and restrained, this one’s all about a flickering keyboard line that changes colors with the light. “Hang for Bruno”: Featuring the contributions of Hang drummer Bruno Bieri and the multi-talented percussionist Omri Hason, “Hang for Bruno” fuses the sounds and traditions of the Caribbean and the Middle East with bleepy electronics and 20th century classical Minimalism. Its ringing harmonics sound like signals from another world. “Fran Left Home”: With its electro-Latino swing and its keening, ambivalent melodies, this is classic Luciano in the vein of his Live @ Weetamix album. “Africa Sweat”: Luciano and Ali Boulo Santo push the definition of “world music” on this thrilling album highlight. Fluid Kora and Senegalese vocals pour like rainwater over a porous rhythmic foundation that branches like the cracks in desert soil. “Pierre for Anni”: A short sketch in which Luciano combines two of his great loves: Field recording and no-holds-barred electronic experimentation. “Metodisma”: The darkest, starkest cut on the album, this sets grinding electronic rhythms against whispers, whoops and screams: Catharsis at 128 BPM. “Oenologue”: Closing out the album, this single-minded groove pays tribute to the pioneers of acid and Detroit techno, a reminder that deep house and electro-acoustic fusions aren’t Luciano’s only stock in trade

Gus Gus – 24/7 || Interview

kom_73_CD_cover_270xYou could compare GusGus´s (Daníel Ágúst, Veiran and President Bongo) 6th studio album with a whale. An animal that spends most of it´s time under the surface, but when it comes up above sea-level, it usually surfaces with a magnificent speciality – much like the latest GusGus creation. Therefore, you should not glean over this work; every moment of it is laid out with painstaking and elaborate candour. 24/7 is a wet dream…

The spine of the music is original, created in the “intestines” of GusGus. “On the Job” is the working man´s phrenetic song to the unbroken animal called love. The opus “Thin Ice´” describes the bloated donkey dancing on ice. And in “Add This Song” the listener is encouraged to add that particular song to his collection.
The GusGus analogue sound environment has never been better, and Daniel Agust´s vocals take the reigns again and thus opens the group’s variability to new heights. As on previous occasions GusGus performs a song written by Jimi Tenor, the fantastic “Take me Baby” where Jimi Tenor is a guest singer. “Hateful” is a pretty family-type song that GusGus and Aaron-Carl composed together while being on different sides of the Atlantic.

GUSGUS are easily one of the most well known acts in electronic music today with over 5 million albums sold in their illustrious career. Don’t call it a comeback but their signing to KOMPAKT marks a crucial step forward for the band and dare we say their most impressive recordings to date. It also marks the return of Daníel Ágúst as a full member for the first time since the 4AD years. 24/7 is a overwhelming, multifarious, interwoven and braided musical atmosphere where the listener has to surrender to the music and adhere to the conditions that the music demands. For fifty-six minutes.

We’ve interviewed one of the producers – Veiran – to get to know more about them and the upcoming release:

minimalandMnmland: First up, let us congratulate you for the magnificent album you’ve produced. Minimaland listened it and it sounds very good. Kompakt said it sounded like a “wet dream”… How would you describe it to our readers?

Veiran: “Well, the new album might be described as some mixture of Gusgus from the past, the doepfer modularsynth, minimal techno, oldstyle Reggie dub and live performance. But that mixture did not come intentionally. Last two albums, Attention and Forever where girlfull preparties featuring Earth as our main singer and lyric writer. When she left for other projects in late 2007 it was time to go to some new party, take swift turn that is. Daniel Ágúst, our former main singer from the nineties, had sung one track on each of these albums, Desire on Attention and Moss on Forever. We approached him to do the next album with us and he agreed. I also had updated my small Doepfer collection (www.doepfer.com) by almost purcasing all the modules thay have avaliable, and also creating one doepfer live unit that included some secred unheard tricks. With those two elements it we where destined to go deeper than on the two prior albums. After feew turns in the studio we had drafted couple of tracks but stranded on the arrangement. It was getting close to the gigs off the summer 2008, so I had no option but to add the unfinished tracks in the live set and just “figure it out” on the road. In that process I added the Boss chorus echo pedal and small kaoss pad, hence the dub style. The first gig at UAF worked great with all the tracks just brilliant. That summer we played with the tracks live at numerous gigs. In the fall it was obvious that this album had to be recorded live. This was not a studio project. We went with the live rig deep north west into Iceland, to Flateyri, and recorded the album live at Tankurinn.”

Mnmland: Are you totally satisfied with the album?

“Yes, I am satisfied with the album. It captures the vibes off gusgus as it is now and also reflects the direction i wanted to take down to dubland.”

Mnmland: What were your thoughts when recording this cd!?

“There was strict dress code in the studio and the hairdo had to be perfect. So preparing the day the focus was on looking slick. During the day we spent more time cooking than recording. The plot was to create special vibe and togetherness as the recording was basically running the liveset couple of times.”

Mnmland: So can we expect this to be something played by Gus Gus around gigs, or is it something to be appreciated with some kind of different mood?

“We have been playing all the songs on the album from the spring of 2008, and i’ll guess we’ll will play them a couple of times more until we figure out what to do on our next album after 24/7. There are not a lot of old tracks in the set. We have Lust and Moss from Forever, and that is about it, but with all these tracks thrown in the gig is almost two hours.”

Mnmland: We must confess that we follow you from the beginning and it really is a surprise to see such many changes on your productions… can you explain to our readers the main differences between your typical music ten years ago and the nowadays productions?

gusgus“Gusgus started out as a collaboration of people with totally different background in music. Me and Buckmaster where in a band called T-World that did kind of ambient driven house music. We we where mixed into the Gusgus project different people had different songs in different genres that needed to be produced as a whole for the Album later called “Polydistortion”. Buckmaster was all about loops at that time so the production was more or less loop based at that time. I think that we were even liked with triphop by some critics. The second album, “This is Normal”, was more the same but further down the pop song road. After the album the band was getting tired as people wanted to go different ways with the project. I was getting tired of this loop based pop stuff and as me, Buckmaster and President Bongo ended with the brand it was time to to something new. While in the makover we released “Gusgus vs Tworld” in 2000 that included some of the Tworlds production from 93 to 95. My love of music started with synth and drum machine driven disco, like Hi-Nrg and Italo disco. Lime and Bobby Orlando were my heros so when reinventing the Gusgus sound in 2002 that was the basics and drum loops were banned. Earth was the new singer and Attention was the album. “Forever” in 2006 was then further down that path but now changes are on the agenda once again.”

Mnmland: Which album/event do you consider to be your biggest achievement up to date?

“24/7″ “is the best album so far but “Forever” will always be close to my heart. All albums contain great tracks though. Purple, Believe, Starlovers, David, Call of the wild, Don’t hide what you feel, Hold you, Need in me and Moss to name a few. As the live set is really fluent all gigs have there charm. Few gigs stand out though. Köln in 1999 at the Palladium and the live set at Viva same year i thing stand out from the past. Melt in 2006 and 2008, the gigs and Benicassim 2001 and 2008 and many more from the first makeover and from the new setup many have been great, Pragh at Roxy for example and last weekend in Köln.”

Mnmland: It’s hard to talk about great influences to some guys that have been producing for 15 years but do you have them? Who are/were they?

“Like i said, Lime, Bobby Orlando, Sylvester, Patrick Cowley and then Soft Cell, Depeche Mode, Ultravox. From the dance scene abstract grooves and deep melodies does the trick for me independent of genres. Carl Craig and Stephan Bodzin i can name for example but many more have done great things”

Mnmland: The fact that you are a trio makes it easier to produce? What are the strongest points of each one of you?

“Me the mind, Daniel the heart and Bongo the will.”

Mnmland: After 15 years, what keeps you going? Do you still get excited when you are producing a new album?

“Making music is always exciting, especially when you don’t have a deadline and none to please but yourself.”

Mnmland: Where do you find all the inspiration? Is it the beautiful landscapes of Iceland?

“Silence, the Doepfer and love of life.”

Mnmland: How would you characterize your sets/live acts? What kind of party vibe do you usually create while spinning?

“The President takes care of the spinning, but drive the arrangements in the live set. The live set is all about luring the listener in with patience and then tearing his soul apart.”

Mnmland: Analog or Digital Technology?

“I have once used softsynth in a track. My Doepfer did not like that. I stick to analog.”

Minimaland: Analog it is! The electronic scene has been in a huge development over the last few years, therefore more demanding in terms of music know-how and software/hardware! How do you stand yourself in this process? How have you been adapting?

“I cant say that i have adapted. Got my Juno 2 in 1986 and it was my only polyphonic synth on all the prior albums. It is responsible for the strings in Purple, Anthem and Call of The wild, Organ in Ladyshave, Piano in Call of the wild and Moss, and synth in Need in Me and David to name some examples. I got my Juno 106 few years back but i’m first using it on the new album. The Monophonic synths i all got in the years 1992 and 1993, the SH-101, CS-30 and the ARP-2600. The Doepfer i first got 1999 and that started me doing most of me drum sounds. I have been adding more Doepver modules to the rig every year. Knowing your gear and getting deep into it is the key to making music, not buying all the latest stuff and patches, that is for producers and i don’t consider me as such.”

Mnmland: Some short questions: Favorite record of all time? Favorite tracks of the moment? Favorite festival?

“Non-stop Erotic Cabaret by Soft Cell. Track at the moment is October – Invitation, Favorite festival are Melt and Benecassim.”

Mnmland: To end this, where do you see yourselves in 15 years?

“Hopefully having a relaxed time enjoying live and teaching my kids on the Doepfer.”

Mnmland: Thanks Veiran for the Interview, we wish you all the best for this and further albums.

Tom Ellis – Sex, Drugs And Sausage Rolls

TEL037LPA

The label telegraph was born during 1999 due to a collaboration of Jean Guillaume Cabanne, always impregnated with funk and dance floor oriented, Telegraph productions are dissociated by more daring experimentation on sounds and rhythms. This is a parallel project with the French label Logistic Records, founded in 1995 by Alexandre Petit and Eric Dalbin.

In what matters to the album, it’s for me one of bests until now and promises to be a huge success due to the enormous quality it carries. “Simple truth” is the firs track of the album showing with simplicity the deep funk that is inherent to Tom Ellis, with sensual vocals that go through the music, always an excellent work in what concerns to bass and a great two sound loop. “Anyhoooo” has the participation of Suz with an abstract vocal, a pretty acceptable one floating on a super danceable rhythm. The fist part of the album ends with “lost The number” containing a beginning full of obscure anomalies and than, on the 3rd minute the show begins, always in the same rhythm, including some small ingredients to satisfy our gentle hears. To begin the 2nd part of this magnificent Lp we find “PPP”, one of my favorites. In this track we can watch the true Tom Ellis style inside of deep minimal funk scene, a simple but genial track. Until 3.35 min it follows the normal routs with a very good rhythm, an interlaced percussion and, as always, the very well worked bass… and for that moment on the party starts wit a synthesized melodic tones and a constant voice followed by multiple little noises coming from everywhere and sculped basses, excellent to a fine tasty summer afternoon. In that way is a more solid track, with a more accelerated rhythm but never stepping out of the initial patterns: a constant rhythm, a spooky voice and the same tones, all of this always in the right moments.. It’s without any doubt an underwater journey reminding huge water bubbles and intact corals. To end the Lp we count with “Right On, developing light mental disturbances giving us the impression that we are in a hip-hop night. Maybe not as danceable as the others but it contains a great quality in it’s percussions…l_5284a28067404457a4c7c363e31c6829

Gimmik – Untitled Concept

gimmikYet another live/production outfit has sprouted from the fertile techno soil of Amsterdam. Its name – Gimikk – echoes the unpretentious attitudes and sounds of our flourishing underground scene. It was the open and co-operative spirit of our new school techno generation that brought Daniel Sanchez and Eelco Augustijn aka. E-Contact together. After two well-received EP’s and a lot of hard work their debute album is a fact. We present to you Untitled Concept, a killer collection of tracks set to shake up dancefloors around the globe.

To kickstart Untitled Concept, Daniel and Eelco locked themselves up for a seven day studio binge. The idea was to get into a certain atmosphere, that would lay the foundation for the rest of the session. With the dancefloor in mind and a range of inspirations in their hearts, Daniel and Eelco created eight tracks carrying the same moving and hypnotic quality; Yet each expressing a different mood or feeling. The outcome is a treat for the ears as well as the feet.

Daniel and Eelco showcase a deep sense of dancefloor dynamics on this album. From the dreamy chords of Lovely Way to the wobbly grooves of Dutch Moment; from the percussive mindfucks of Paranoid Nerd to the luscious flows of Soulboy – each is made up of the same effective rhythms bound to set any dancefloor aflame. Untitled Concept is suitable for different dj’s and occasions. Be it the peaktime power of Complex Construction or the 7AM-like deepness of Movement, the album is a sure shot for each moment of the night.

Daniel and Eelco aptly named their album Untitled Concept, because they know that everybody listens to music in a different way – thus leaving room for interpretation. All is all, we would like to congratulate these talented young producers on a job well done. It truly makes you wonder what other Gimikks they have up those magical sleeves of theirs…

Minimaland Feedback: Remote Area is in the top of the mainstream minimal tech house scene, every release they launch is clearly above the average and this Gimmik production follows the same wave. If you’re looking for clean tools full of rhythm and techy patterns this is your choice. This album is all that minimal tech house represents with choices that will turn your Summer into something more tasty! To be listened in all kinds of environments. Gimmik more!

Sean Palm – Days On End

Sean Palm Studio 23Its all about family around these parts of town. Whether blood or not, a tight infrastructure of friends, collaborators, jokers and nut jobs are pushing and breaking musical boundaries. For days on end these unpredictable situations fuel an urge to capture life’s greater moments through sound.
This is the Sean Palm vision. The Railyard Co-Founder was born, raised and still remains in New York’s premiere suburban playground. He was there from the very beginning of the East Coast Movement, and the earworms that dug deep into the Sean Palm program are evident in the sounds of Underground Resistance, Warp, Harthouse, Eye Q and R&S Records. With over 15 years of techno experience in his arsenal, Sean Palm emerges with an Artist Album that crosses the 4/4 boundaries of House and Techno. Dare we say it even touches upon real deal “Trance”? Not the kind you listen to while the Mickey Mouse gloves are in the dryer, mind you…
The album launches with the simple sounds of Silent Storm and Polyphonic. The opening tracks invite the listener to soak in the deep reverberations of an underwater excursion. Seemless Dreams then steps up and spreads its strings wide, pushing forward the album’s energy. Not losing sight of dancefloor friendliness, Sightings, Lost in The Bronx and Days On End fuse an array of early 90’s Trance influences with modern day Hypnotic Techno design. Coming back down to earth is the wonky Green Matrix, wobbling with bits and blobs falling perfectly into place. The latter part of the excursion sees the strange computer rhythms of Drumatrix that dance in conjunction with proper synths over constantly building, intelligent drum programming. Palm rounds out the album with 10 Years Later, a lush, organic House production with an overall healing touch…
The eclectic Techno label from New York is on point again with their first debut full length from their head-honcho.

Minimaland Feedback: This album was really a good surprise, we were expecting a nice cd but not something like this, a work made by genius, this will fit to almost every circumstance, the techno quality is well above the average, with hypnotic minimal patterns all the way! I can’t stop listening this, one of the best cd’s of the year in Minimaland’s perspective. If you like it soft, refined, full of emotion and small moves, buy this one! Quality ensured.

Hervé AK – Lost

hervec2a6u28The French producer is back, this time with a larger soul, full of new musical environments. After having passed through labels like kompakt, obsolete or stir it’s time to run to other horizons, like Morec with only three years of existence. This new disc is composed by 4 fabulous tracks, having each one of them a little sample of these new ideas of Hervé Ak. “LOST” is the first track presenting a tasty musical growing pattern, based on sharp sounds followed by a gentle and relaxing dry beat. This is something different on the French Herve AK works, maybe trying to accept the Asian musical culture. “lent” is the second track of this work transmitting a very good vibe with an explosive noise on small scale along with melodies that stick right into your hears achieving a great combination during the most charged moments of the track. “sesta cella” is a powerful one, excellent to a great morning of this coming summer. A good selection of sounds and brilliant percussion rhythms transforms this track to a journey on witch the only feeling is to think on a nature full of environmental quality. “voluptia” is my favourite track of this release because it contains the ingredients required to make appreciators excited on this extraordinary melancholic minimal.l_65b4578650a5b645cd8ae64df1ad775b

It will be a huge success in all the party’s of the next coming season. To end this review i would like to leave a small word of appreciation to this new Japanese label wishing them all the success.

Jay Haze – Fabric 47

jay-hazeIt’s difficult to know where to begin with an artist as complex and multifaceted as Jay Haze. On one hand, his upbringing – desolate beginnings in the processing plant-infested lands of northeast Pennsylvania, surrounded by drug addiction, death, group homes and jail – is a tainted window into the complicated soul within. But on the other hand, against all odds, nothing has overshadowed his talents, and the family of like-minded artists he has shaped is testament to his unshakable spirit and unerring ability.

Jay Haze stands out as a visionary in the world of techno and house, a true nonconformist within a blinkered scene. But his work supports his revered status as an exceedingly prolific producer, DJ, live performer, collaborator and label owner. His wide-ranging labels ring true to themselves and never sway, each holding on tight to their own characteristic sound and group of artists: the house-oriented TuningSpork; the harder hitting tech-based Contexterrior and the downtempto dubby tones of Future Dub.

“TuningSpork was always the more housey one. Getting people to laugh is a form of seduction, and that’s what TuningSpork is about: being positive, funny, not taking itself too seriously. Then Contexterrior was more serious, more avant garde, more pushing the limits of sounds. I started TuningSpork with Sean O’Neal, aka Someone Else, and Bjoern Hartman, and then I started Contexterrior on my own. Future Dub was a label that exists, but never really existed. We have had 6 releases in 9 years, it was just for my love of dub reggae; if it comes, I’ll release it. I have so many different musical loves.” – Jay Haze

fabric47_jay_haze200Jay also brought on the explosion of 2003’s Textone, his inventive creation of an online music magazine and internet label, which was created years before digital stores like Beatport or the now-prevalent online magazines/blogs had caught on. Beyond his own labels, Jay Haze’s genre-expanding, experimental productions have graced the catalogues of Playhouse, Kitty-Yo, Cocoon, Get Physical, and his remixes have been on labels far and wide, from Shitkatapult to Playhouse to BPitch Control to Soma. In 2005, he released his debut LP on Kitty-Yo, ‘Love For a Strange World,’ an album that challenged the world of techno further by questioning genre lines and embracing all that’s unconventional and unpredictable. His more dancefloor (and humour) geared moniker Fuckpony launched his career with Get Physical, the ‘Children of Love’ album being one of the most celebrated underground albums of 2006.

It’s interesting that someone whose life story has so many dark chapters still dedicates much of his music to love – wearing his heart on his record sleeves, for instance, as well as his endless dedication to charity work. “I’ve been homeless two times not by my own doing – by life situations, crazy coincidences. In those times on the street, I have seen the lowest things you could possibly imagine – paedophiles, blood suckers, I know what this world is made of. It’s these things that motivate me to do charity work. I want to help people who have it even worse than I did. When I was younger, I got so stuck on thinking my life was so bad, lost in really dark moments – but as I get older, all I can think about is helping others. I think it comes with the happiness of still being alive.” – Jay Haze

And it’s this that leads us on to fabric 47, an incomparable mix that lends itself to the world, in more ways than one. In addition to donating a piece of himself to the music world, Jay Haze will also be donating all profits made from the mix to the rest of the world, specifically “The Democratic Republic of Congo. I work with different charities, and because fabric is a UK company, I wanted to honour that and do something in the UK, so I’m working with Merlin Health Services. What they do is really positive, and 95% of every dollar you give goes out into the field, and this is provable. Right now, they’re working in Congo, a country of 75 million people that’s been in civil war for 50 years. 1200 people die every day of simple things, preventable things, and it breaks my heart.” – Jay Haze

fabric_logo_2 fabric 47 is the deep, wandering heartbeat of 4/4’s most bold, valiant and versatile character; a bright, cohesive mix that is inherently Jay Haze through and through. Deeply-rooted in his free and capricious spirit, the flawlessly assembled collection of tracks thump with soul and alluring eccentricities. Grooving with an airtight flow across wide-ranging beats and styles, fabric 47 is a charismatic portrait of Jay Haze’s musical clan: the mix not only showcases the peerless artists he works with on his family of labels, as well as the many monikers that comprise Jay Haze, it’s also a glimpse into the soul-fuelled, future sound that they’ve collectively mastered. Teased throughout with samples from his Fuckpony track ‘Lady Judy’ (a song dedicated to our own fabric promoter, Judy Griffith – and a nod to the Daniel Bell classic, ‘Baby Judy’), he takes things dubbier with Alex Celler’s enchanting ‘Trapped In Dub’, trippier with the groove-laden ‘Mellow Dee’ (created with former studio partner Ricardo Villalobos in ’08), and epic with the penultimate Fuckpony track, ‘Burning’, fabric 47 is Jay Haze incarnate; deep, daring and brave. Seventy minutes in the company of this disc leaves you feeling edified and your faith in music’s brilliance renewed.

“I realized this mix was a great opportunity for me to put my people on, and it represents exactly what I stand for in this scene and my contribution. In the beginning I thought, should I put my own labels’ music on here? Is that too daft? But after some serious thinking, I really couldn’t be happier with the way it came together. I was able to get some of the core artists I work with to give me some exclusives, some yet to be released and even some edits of tracks I loved from their pasts. And I was able to combine it with a cause I believe is worth fighting for, so in a sense all the music I used brought my artists closer to me, and made them part of my experience. It’s a very personal mix” – Jay Haze
