Brazilian bomb, GUI BORATTO continues have left an indelible mark on the dance world this year with the acclaimed full length “TAKE MY BREATH AWAY” proving that he’s no one trick pony and easily one of the most diverse and remarkable talents to have emerged over the past decade. The past 6 months have brought him to every point of the globe with his live show and he shows no sign of slowing down with a slew of club and festival appearances to take him well into fall. We couldn’t be prouder of the guy and his continued perseverance and genuine appreciation of music.
“NO TURNING BACK” has been clearly declared as the choice cut by the fans and DJ’s everywhere….take YouTube who have a simple stream with over 135,000 listens! Many cite the tune as the sequel to “BEAUTIFUL LIFE”. It almost makes sense. “NO TURNING BACK” similarly oozes the narcotic pop eloquence that characterized “BEAUTIFUL LIFE” thanks to Gui’s wife, Luciana Villanova making her anticipated return on vocals. So, when it came to doing the remix there came a long, ardent discussion…thankfully when it came down to the wire the decisions came swift and well, we’re punch drunk happy about the results. We’ve got something for everyone this round!
First up comes from the WIGHNOMY BROTHERS (aka ROBAG WRUHME & MONKEY MAFIA). No introductions are needed for them. They have a long and amazing history of remixes and this once again proves they have plenty of game left. Luciana’s vocals waft throughout a sun drenched, summer dazed bass drum and melody loop. Pure sunset rubdown. THE MOLE is on a roll…this Montrealer now Berlin based ex pat has nobody saying bad things about what he’s producing and there’s good reason why – his WAGON REPAIR album last year continues to resound on dance floors today and his recent single “FOR THE LOST” was one of the first true success singles of 2009 being one of the few anthems of Miami’s WMC. He ingeniously twists the original into completely moody, mental overdrive. Conjuring the early Sheffield house vibe of the Forgemasters, this is a remix that defines what the term ‘deep’ should mean to folks out there.

Minimaland Feedback: If you don’t know this Kompakt series by now, I don’t now where have you been! It’s their 10th, one each year, and I suggest them all! More than good music, Kompakt present us some of the best moments of electronic music history. Total series are genuine, they have always followed their pattern and it’s just keeps getting better every year. Geoffroy is the head of the Mugwump project (a moniker he initiated, initially working with fellow Belgians Spirit Catcher and now pursued with Olivier Grégoire aka Kolombo, his main partner) and he has been a long resident (as a Dj off course) in one of the most famous Belgian house clubs for several years.
I must confess that I’ve already liked a lot their 1st release on Kompakt (Meditation Ep), but after I’ve listened “Fears Inc” I was sure that this was a great project. The A side displays a cool deep electro house tune reminding us some of the best acid tracks of the 90’s. “Mugwump roll out a majestic, sanguine deephouse track that builds up to total frenzy including bloodcurdling screams and all”. In the flipside “Nothing Without You” appears in a great frenzy diving deep through some acid states that also make us remind the beginning of dance music. Do you remember ACID HOUSE? this is IT, filled with the proper new century beat and some hypnotic states that will drive you mad! This is certainly my favorite track of the Ep and the reason of why I’m buying this one. Already being played by Michael Mayer, Superpitcher and others. Mugwump will be releasing their next Ep at Cocoon (”Mindflexes”)… be aware!

Two years have passed and much has changed since Gui Boratto shot to prominence with his Kompakt debut ‘Chromophobia’. A much needed spot of colour amidst the minimal milieu, Gui’s mixture of fierce production skills and a blissful pop sensibility have characterized his trajectory to the techno heavyweight before us today.

Amidst a rigorous touring schedule and busy family life arises ‘Take My Breath Away’, Gui’s eagerly anticipated sophomore album. Laced with subtle critique and double-entendre, Gui’s philosophical approach is adept at packaging the rough, smooth, bitter and sweet into a number of emotive and ultimately optimistic productions.

The title track is a fitting example. Equally a statement of concern and call for solidarity, ‘Take My Breath Away’ conveys a sense of scale and immediacy with soaring melodic progressions and pounding bass. Epic and densely constructed, clattering metallic tones escalate to a howling climax before a deep pulsed drive to close.

Recent single ‘Atomic Soda’ rasps with gritty hovering synth and complex rhythms, phase transitioning into a monolithic bass stomp with staccato percussive modulation that was built to move. The bit crushed melodies of ‘Colors’ enters shimmering dream pop territory, while ‘Opus 17′ marks Gui’s 17th album track, continuing the lineage of his debut with a mixture of droning Cologne, shuffling IDM beats and kaleidoscopic synth textures.

‘No Turning Back’ jars with uneasy cyclical rhythms, developing a tension that breaks with a chorus as grandiose as it is energetic. Gui’s wife Luciana Villanova provides the Midas touch yet again, contributing a stirring vocal reminiscent of her contribution to Gui’s anthemic ‘A Beautiful Life’.

More understated than it’s predecessor, ‘Azzura’ swings with delicate harmonic shifts, while ‘Les Enfants’ features a tripped out organ melody and live drum break to continue the brief descent in pace.

‘Ballroom’ is strictly club material, probing with stabbed synth and the hardest kick on the record. Taken deep and destabilized with uneasy melodic tones, it provides a fitting introduction to closer ‘Eggplant’. Patiently progressing from ascendant synth chords to a tightly wound concoction of frenetic percussion and dissonant harmonic elements, ‘Eggplant’ gathers enough energy to break the most vegetative of states.
