Gaiser – Pullshup

61574After a long wait Gaiser gets back to m_nus for another installment. Pullshup is his new EP and after listening it I can say to you that I really missed his releases. You’ll recognize his sound instantly, all of his music contain a very particular signature that I really appreciate. His creations always go through nocturnal atmospheres, full of dark possessed scary sounds working like a guideline to a perfect night of madness. The first track of this release is “Pullshup” stepped by the patterns that I wrote above, with a strong beat setting up the pace in a percussive frenzy. The synth lines are very penetrating and the subliminal vocals will enter into your subconscious instantly. Next comes “Oolooloo” in a more deep groove, with a nice 4/5 Kick pattern, and some acid synths that will cause serious damage into your brain. If you buy the digital release you will have another two tracks, starting with “Mfnstmp” that makes me remind some of Gaiser’s firsts productions, a very particular one with some neurotic synths, among a step by step construction, always leaded by a perfect bass meltdown. Very similar to Frankie’s style. “Semaphore” ends up in a great style, starting with the typical beat of Jon Gaiser and evolving around a killer bass line, dark synths and some twisted voices that will install the mess wherever it-s played! If you like m_nus style, then this is a must have

Gaiser – Blank Fade

m67_pac_shot_smallGAISER
Blank Fade
M67 CD, LP, WAV, MP3

Rls Date: 19.11.2008

In a genre where artists often struggle for identity, Jon Gaiser is one of those rare producers whose sound is instantly recognisable. The solo projects, collaborations and remixes he’s created over the course of his output on Minus, all contain a very specific signature to the point where his tracks come alive, communicating in a language that speaks with the strangest, most intoxicating of tongues.

His highly anticipated debut album, Blank Fade, is no exception, and it sees him pushing the envelope even further resulting in the most comprehensive and impressive body of work he has accomplished so far. Alongside this he has taken full advantage of the vinyl, digital and CD formats on offer to not only produce a collection of stunning individual tracks but also to mix them together in a way that typically reflects his live performance. The body of the tracks remain the same but Gaiser works the seamless transitions to the max by extending the intros and outros to reproduce those magical live moments when a third place momentarily slips into view. In doing so he has created an experience where the whole piece becomes greater than the sum of the parts.

Blank Fade represents a mixture of tried and tested ideas generated on the road (such as the show-stopping first single Trunkated) and new material written during Minus’ 10 weeks of silence. The main premise for the album is to start in one place and end up in another without realising and seeing how Gaiser’s music works like a soundtrack to some hidden nocturnal habitat, full of weird and wonderful creatures that stalk the darkness, it’s not long before we’re lost in the forest of his imagination.

Eerie and atmospheric, Volve sets the scene perfectly, drifting amid a wash of distant echoes and ghostly EFX before a solitary kick drum punctures the darkness. Face Down continues the theme, gradually picking up the pace as the beats begin alternating around a tight, metronomic snare. A pulsing sub bass loop carries the groove while abstract vocal cut-ups penetrate deep into the subconscious. With a perfectly executed mix, Ground effortlessly switches to a 4/4 kick pattern as Gaiser slowly turns the screw, continuing the unearthly vocal theme against a sparse backdrop of crackling electricity and metallic drones. Suddenly we’re in classic territory as Ciliate With lets fly with a trademark bass riff that’s soon joined by one of those memorable bleeping call and response riffs that could only ever be the work of Gaiser.

Whether Or Not maintains the tension with an equally urgent bass line and a brutal snare that powers head first into a swarm of warping synth lines, before Substance B turns in a percussive frenzy that’s as devastating as it is intuitive and will create absolute mayhem on the dance floor. The CD overlap into Comma, Fade is as good as they get, ushering in a more subliminal groove driven by a funked up bass/organ riff and cantering percussion, while Leave It dims the lights once again with pitched down vocals and distant, drifting sirens that add a hint of menace to the mix.

This all sets things up perfectly for Trunkated – a real powerhouse of a track, that’s as complete as anything you’re likely to hear this year. Every element is honed to perfection from the molten bass to the irresistible percussion parts, from the mischievous, dancing bleeps to the twisted synth motif that seems to rip through the delicate fabric of reality. Descending Order then goes into freefall, releasing the pressure value as distant melodies gently eat into your serotonin supply and you lose yourself in the breakdown. One After continues the theme utilising a sliding, bass driven variation of the preceding melody as the beats finally begin to thin out, allowing the slow, ambient drift of Outline to smooth out the fragmented memories of what has gone before and draw things neatly to a close.

Finally, the unmixed digital download album also includes the bonus track Rate 78.17, a beatless exercise in bass manipulation that represents another experimental string to Gaiser’s bow and in doing so, suggests there’s much more to come from this exceptional producer, musician and live performer.

Niederflur – Typo Ep

Niederflur (Christopher Bleckmann & Hannes Wenner duo), debuted on M_nus label, and only by itself these five simple words (MINUS) make music panorama crumble when a new Ep is arriving from their Headquarters. So, judging Niederflur’s debut on M_nus label it’s like judging angel’s sex. It’s a quality add-on fact.
What to say about Niederflur – Typo EP? Well… It’s really hard to find an Ep that goes on all the spectrum of the techno/minimal-techno genre with this level of quality. Let’s put in dj language… you put this Ep in your bag and in every point of your set you have a mix for it, from the top to the bottom, from the hypnotic to the progressive, you choose!
Reviewing, Typo is typical techno bassed with a trip appearing on the horizon that goes on and on till the end with the bass derivable to the harmony trip. Iso goes minimal tripy, details and confused/clean highs leading to some kind of trance. In all the musics the bass is always niederflur. What’s niederflur basses? Richie Hawtin called them “basslines from hell”! Led is my favourite one, a lot to the hypnotic drives. The bass is melted, reverbed and hypnotic, and the construction follows that path, in a very minimal reverbed bass hypnotic way. Amp (one of the digital releases), is a really good progressive one, ideal if you want to keep the stage, or start the top peek. Finally , Pvc (the other digital release), I’ll call it minimal electro techno. Fits electro sets, fits techno sets, and fits minimal sets needing some variation to a good side. Really great sound games with a electronic computerized sound creating a disabled addictive harmony.
I’ll consider this a don’t miss Ep. Haves great quality, great grooves, great sample games, great variations… Doesn’t have a track that will be the one of the year, but for sure all these five tracks will be in the best sets of this year. It’s a great quality “all-terrain” Ep. 8/10

1 TYPO (7:19)
2 ISO (6:01)
3 LED (6:12)
4 AMP (5:39)
5 PVC (5:24)

Marc Houle – Sixty-Four

marc-houle-64Each Wednesday of this month Marc Houle will release a new Ep with 3 digital tracks -mp3’s – that are available on Beatport and Minus official site. So in the end of the month you’ll get to have 12 brand new tracks from this genuine producer. The Sixty-Four series represents a new phase in Houle’s career – he spent the most of the year in the production of this album. These 12 tracks were only meant to work as Dj Tools for Magda, Troy Pierce and Richie Hawtin over the summer but their big success – several Dj’s tried to get them – made Minus guys changed their minds and then the Sixty-Four series was born!

In the first week will be available the digital release of “Sands”, “Deathray At You” and “Jouster”. You can count on heavy deep acid stuff and dark rude basslines. Jouster will probably be the biggest hit of this series, it’s composed by a classic minimal beat and bassline fulfilled by acid elements and a neurotic sampled vocal.
Week 2 is dedicated to 80’s computer and video game culture. The ones from those times will gladly listen this Ep remembering some of this twisted samples. Door Nobula bookmarks this release with a more aggressive fusion of acid lines and techno.
Week 3 might seem more subtle and calm release, but in a few minutes you will understand that this is another dancefloor killer. Expect dark hypnotic grooves throughout this Ep and an unusual electro-funk groove installed in the euphoric “Ketchup and Beans” – very different to what he normally produces.
Last, but not the least week 4, completing this amazing pack of huge tracks. “Meatier Shower” has a fantastic bass and a Magda (!) vocal. This insane neurotic bomb will conquer everyone that listens it! “Investments” surfs another waves going through several effects and delays that will disturb your mind… and finally “What Are You Doin” ends this row perfectly. Intense beat and a nice set of acoustic drums.
If anyone had any doubts of this guy talent I hope that’s over now! This set that initially was only to be used as Dj Tools turned out to be a pack of very intense, disturbed and hallucinated songs with the unique Marc Houle’s fingerprint! Unmissable
