Steve Bug – The Lab 02

LAB002s-coverWith the first instalment of “The Lab” from Loco Dice receiving critical acclaim, it’s no surprise that for ˚2 the prestigious NRK imprint have drafted in Steve Bug, arguably one of the finest and most innovative underground DJs in the world.

With a career which has seen him excel as a DJ, Producer, A&R and Label Manager, Bug has always been on point and this mix is no different. Having started his career, quite aptly on the party isle of Ibiza, back in 1991, the man known to his parents as Stefan Brugesch broke into production in the early 90s, recording for the now legendary Hamburg based Superstition Recordings. A string of early releases (including one for Felix Da Housecat’s fledgling Radikal Fear label), shaped the ‘Steve Bug’ sound of minimal tech house aimed squarely at the dancefloor. By 1998, Bug had set up two record labels to reflect the wealth of talent in his musical circles, Poker Flat Recordings and Dessous.

Now, in 2009 and fresh from releasing his “Collaboratory” long player earlier this year, Bug returns to the decks to deliver 2 discs of house music as only he can. Taking in the length and breadth of contemporary house, the mixes are programmed in a way that screams Bug.

From the opening melodies of Ostgut man Nick Hoeppner via the low down grooves of Londoner Kevin Griffiths, CD1 is a fluid succession of electronic deep house cuts with an emphasis on melody and variation. From the revivalist feel of Kai Alice feat. Azulu Panton’s “Power Thru 3” and Rocco’s “The Man” to the futurist funk of Berkson and What’s “Cycles”, the transitions are smooth and the overview warm before culminating in the warped funk of Kiki’s “Good Voodoo”.

steve-bugCD2 develops things wonderfully, picking up from CD1’s deep vibe and adding an angular, peak time edge to the mix. Opener “The Soul Part 2” by Craig Smith on the fledgling imprint Delusions of Grandeur sums this transition up perfectly with its warm outlook spiked by a bubbling acid bassline. Nagging and hypnotic, the mix remains heads down but resolutely compelling with DJ Koze’s remix of Blagger on Perspectiv, Art Of Tones’ “Call The Shots” and Cobblestone Jazz’s “Traffic Jam” providing forward thinking highlights.

The Lab 02 further cements the reputation of one of electronic music’s best love sons whilst establishing this compilation series as a must have for music fans everywhere

Steve Bug – Collaboratory

BUG Collab Schuber 03 Dj and Producer with over 15 years of tireless dedication to the scene, Steve Bug is proud to announce his fourth artist album – “Collaboratory” that will be out on Poker Flat Recordings during June. This work was based strongly on the ideas of collaboration, shared ideas and mutual respect for fellow artists and the strength of combining forces in the studio so Steve had to chose some special producers and vocalists to work with. From Berlin came Cassy and Clé (part of Martini Bros) and Paris The Black, one half of Detroit Grand Pubahs, ace producers that could assure quality! From the southern emisphery came Simon Flower featuring with Bug on their new teasing cut “Passing Clouds” while Minimise boss Donnacha Costello also went head to head in the studio to create “Still Music”. To mention also the stunning full-length vocals of Brazilian talent Virginia Nascimento on the slow-spun “Trust in Me”. Although the bulk of this addictive, instant classic consists of collaborative works, there’s still a handful of fresh solo Bug treats in store…

The album starts with “Trees Can’t Dance” transmitting instant warm vibes perfect to be spread on early morning sessions in the best clubs or open party’s around the world, this modern classic provides the perfect opening tones for the album. Next comes the textured “Swallowed Too Much Bass” featuring the twisted vocal talents of Paris the Black Fu in a highly funky and spooky straight-to-the-floor workout exploring perfectly acid flavors and some classic synth that we normally listen in Bug’s work. Cassy tones show up in the third track in a slow-cooking jam that combines acid house moments with deep dub pics reminding us some classic house traditions and how they can be suited to our times. The album continues with the tool “You Never…” building the energy and tension to approach the next set of tracks…

pokerflatProduced by two long time friends and collaborators (Bug and Clé) “Month of Ship” evolves around profound dark-house vibes and some pitching rave-signals. Expect nothing but pure quality, beats that cut through the mix like a finely sharpened blade, and luxury synth work. One of the best works of the album. 6th track is “Mr. Suitcase” full of slowly progressing melodic movements and timeless layered synth themes. A harmonious moment, marking the middle point of the album. A track to listen in those long journeys full of thoughts, dreams and expectations. “Trust In Me” features the amazing vocal talents of Brazilian musician Virginia Nascimento, who currently resides in Berlin. This deep swung song is structured around a slow house vibe, but still works in a club environment with its hypnotic, ringing synth hooks and heavy bass elements. Simon Flower the New Zealand based artist appears on track 8 “Passing Clouds” teaming up with Steve to build a huge minimal groove in true Poker Flat style. The blossoming synth lines build up an organic fresh mysterious dancefloor adventure while the softer melodic moments draw attention to the finer ends of the production. Amazing tune!

An exciting collaboration between Steve and Donnacha Costello marks the last part of this genuine album. IN “Still Music” they were able to build the most immediate dancefloor cut of this set of tracks where an acid-line monster rises up from firm foundation along with a twisted rude beat and some surprising textural elements and effects. “Like It Should Be” is a stripped down Chicago-inspired cut that keeps the groove focused an restrained, allowing the wonderful, rousing vocals of Gigi (Finnish co-partner of Sam & Gigi) to really shine through in another track that really suits well to Poker Flat patterns. The last closing track of the album is “Cherry Blossoms” in a deep classic electronic style that have surely been absorbed into Steve’s core over the years of finding. It’s the perfect track to end this kind of work, an album that owes its musical strength to the roots of this scene, those early warehouse days, the wonderful moments of discovery and the treasured times shared among true friends…

steve-bugThe time and effort spent on this remarkable body of work is clear through the astounding quality, warmth and sheen of the recording. Steve Bug’s productions never disappoint, yet with “Collaboratory” his sound has been lifted to even greater heights, rejuvenating a ton of classic machines and analogue gear to enhance the production, giving every track a distinctive, lively and full aesthetic. Natural analogue harmonics and warm mid ranges color the mix with a velvet hue, making this a long-player that’s a joy to re-live, time and again! ..”Collaboratory” is a beautiful, refreshing and open-minded reminder why talents like Steve Bug are so hard to find… Thanks to his wealth of talent and dedication to his art, he’s ensured a whole new wave of fans, as he treads the bright, promising path of 2009 and beyond! Not to miss…

10 Years of Pokerflat @ Fabric

pokerflat

SATURDAY 14th MARCH 2009
TEN YEARS OF POKER FLAT…

ROOM ONE: TEN YEARS OF POKER FLAT… Steve Bug, Martin Landsky, D’Julz
ROOM TWO: Terry Francis, Slam, Edit_Select (LIVE)
ROOM THREE: Craig Richards, Daniel Bell

The year is 1999: the Euro has just launched, people are panicking about the millennium bug, there’s a total eclipse happening, Bill Clinton is president of the US, Glenn Hoddle is still England manager……and somewhere in Germany, Steve Bug is plotting world domination. Ten years on and his vision has borne fruit many times over – the upshot of this scheming was Poker Flat, a record label that embodied and epitomised the stripped-down minimal sound that has been ubiquitous for much of the last decade.

From Guido Schneider to Phonique to Trentemoller, some of house and techno’s most feted composers have come to prominence through their accomplishments on Poker Flat wax. The label was among the building blocks of minimal – and has remained relevant; always progressing, always willing to push new artists, and to this day it strides on as one of the most pioneering labels in electronic music. They recently marked another landmark with their one hundredth single release, the ‘House of God’ remix package, which includes Phonique’s reworking (a track that also appears on their commemorative tenth anniversary release ‘Poker Flat, ‘All In’). This three disc special is divided into Poker Flat classics, the best of the current crop, and a disc of unreleased hidden gems from the vaults.

On Saturday March 14 Steve Bug and posse will share their unbridled (or unhinged) joy at reaching this landmark with the faithful in fabric’s Room One. Conducting the glee, Steve Bug will be guiding his loyal following through a set of music plucked from house and techno’s bleeding edge. Joining him will be the Poker Flat family genius Martin Landsky, a man who combines elements from across the techno spectrum, from sparse bleepy goodness to thick beats and tougher basslines. Rounding off the lineup is D’Julz, a long term associate of the Poker Flat family – releasing on the label over the years, as well as its house-orientated sibling Dessous – who will set the dial to quality, underground, deep house.

Those well-versed in techno will need no introduction to Slam. This Scottish duo is largely responsible for nurturing one of the world’s finest techno scenes, in Glasgow. Their brainchild Soma Records has been a solid pillar of electronic music for over fifteen years, and been home to their own music as well as to the likes of Funk D’Void, Alex Smoke and most famously the first releases by Daft Punk. They will be bringing Soma quality deep, pulsing techno to Room Two. Also in the cavernous confines of our second room will be Terry Francis and Edit_Select, who will be keeping the Glasgow vibe burning with a live set of his intense minimal techno.

In Room Three, Craig Richards makes one of his occasional forays upstairs, so expect something a bit different from him. Craig will be joined by the veteran and legend Daniel Bell, a man whose music in the early 90s is widely recognized as one of the pre-cursors to the minimal house and techno sounds that were later developed by the likes of Poker Flat – that’s some pedigree.

“It means a lot to celebrate at fabric. I’ve been playing regularly there for a long time now, I did a fabric mix CD a while ago and now we are cel

ebrating our 10 years anniversary together – that’s what I call a REAL relationship,” Steve Bug says with a wink and a smile. “This will be D’Julz’s first appearance in fabric in years – same with Martin, the music will be great all night long.”
