Onno – After School Special

CS389344-01A-BIGOnno already proved to us just what he was capable of brewing together in his Amsterdam sound kitchen on the last Home Sweet Home compilation with the track “Common Sense”. And because it was so great there’s a remix of “Common Sense” from David Labeij on this release. Groove magazine has compared him to Frankfurt’s Funkyness, his magic cauldron is filled with a perfect concoction of rolling bass lines, sneaky vocal snippets simmering in a sauce of percussive beats. “The boy who drank too much” makes no exception, everything is exact and to the point and with one goal in mind,-to groove. “My Dad Lives In A Downtown Motel” shows us that he knows where to place an instrumental disco roll so that it ends up on every DJ’s menu. For those that still haven’t had their fill of Onno’s digital delicacies, “Bagels are fresh” is sure to cure your appetite, at least for now

Minimaland Feedback: Another fresh release on Upon You, one of the most supported labels here in the land. All the original tracks will be massive  dancefloor hits but Labeij’s remix is the one that will tear it apart!

Re-Up – As We Like It

m9t34lUpon You is a label to continue following during 2010. Their releases are, beyond any doubts, some of the strongest of the entire techno minimal scene and they came to confirm it, once again, with Re-Up, a duo & live act composed by the Italian Alberto Leonardi & Omar Mazzon – from Spain. In As We Like It you will be able to listen some of the most refined techno produced out there. Re-Up transmits a certain latin vibe that suits well to the label. Also their bass work is huge, they easily create those kinds of grooves that are able to turn the dancefloor mad. Energic non-stopping rhythms, pumping basslines and strong constructions are the standards of this label, and this guys.
In “Da Boom” you’ll have a subtile bass lines that melt into hypnotic percussion with some humanoid voices that you are sure to recognize from their musical portfolio. “Journey” has a wicked little synth-line that will eat away at the techno fans empty guts, while “Pierre Et le Loop” nonchalantly comes around the corner to make everything better again with his soft spacial sounds that shimmer through the intricate sound framework. Ending this comes “As we like”, which like the other three, makes you want to get out your dancing shoes and go for it like you’re going for Olympic gold. Supported by Martin Eyerer, Sierra Sam, Gregor Tresher, Butane, Someone Else, Boris Werner, Luciano, Mathias Mesteno and Brothers Vibe. A funky solid pumping release…

The Cheapers – White Hole

uponyou28After a long time of absence the duo composed by Fraenzen Texas & Ruede Hagelstein is back to Upon You to present the “White Hole”, a documentation of a time when The Cheapers were together in a dark vault and they were only attending the on going outer world through a white hole. Apart from this strange story I’m glad to say that this is maybe the best release of Upon You during 2009. The Ep begins with a massive “Disorder” able to cause some serious damage into your limbic system due to an intoxicating melody combined with a rough 4×4 beat and a serious bass line. It’s everything you can demand on a dancefloor and it has been supported by some of the most known Dj’s out there like Monika Kruse, Mark Henning or Mike Monday. B1 goes more deep and minimal and it’s carried by amazing chords that give a great sense of appeal to the music. After some subtleness the heavy charges come back in “white Hole”, a track with some weird vocals that give an obscure environment to it. The chords appear again, this time in hypnotic mode and the bassline is really captivating. When I listen this track it’s like The Cheapers are telling me a story and that’s something that I appreciate in music. Release nr.28 on Upon You, their best in a while.

Channel X – Mosquito

00_channel_x_-_mosquito-(uy025)-vinyl-2009-side-b-empThe fist work of this German duo by Upon U was called Burning Train and had a huge success. After that work the German label, that has been present in the scene for the last two years, has launched several interesting works by the hands of producers like Marcus Meinhardt, Ruede Hagelstein, Mathias Mesteño ou ate mesmo The Cheapers. This new Channel X work features three tracks, on the a side we have an unique and magnificent track, “Euphoria” starting with a fine rhythm, very powerful, but that goes calming down to the sound of a constant angelical voice for almost two minutes, moments where you’ll feel your heart breaking apart… from that moment forward it’s just evolution! this is a track where we can find the true meaning of the word “recycling” in minimal music, marked by long pauses inputting a new energy to the track, very well achieved by this duo. In the flipside we start with Mosquito, a trip to a different world where we are constantly pushed by flying insect. It has a notable growing pattern, with the necessary breaks, an excellent bass line in a growing tone from the beginning until the end of the track. Ending it up comes “rising Sun”, very appropriated to this Summer season, portraying an intense light reflecting in a mirror of calm deep waters. Nice rhythm full of strong sensations with lots of power added on…. excellent to the dance floors.

Some opinions:

Robert Dietz: “Mosquito is amazing. hypnotic groove…”

2000 And One: “Dark techno stuff, nice n deep!”

Monika Kruse: “Funky shit! upon you is doing great releases! full support!”

Ivan Smagghe: “always super solid and playable. rocking.”

Gregor Tresher: “Euphoria sounds great, I like!”

Miss Jools: “Nice ep,,rising sun for me”

Mathias Mesteno – In Laws

mestenoI think Minimaland has already showed all their love for Upon You releases. Almost every one of them have the ability to surprise us and even if we expect the very best from this label, their rarely let usdown. This is the 2nd time we present a Mathias Mesteno work and if you liked the last one you’ll surely like this! The Ep is composed by three amazing tracks starting with “Andrea” a deep tech house seductive production where a heavy bassline and some high fashion loops (very similar to Detroit’s style) stand out! This track has a growing pattern since it starts and it will easily be a major hit in the dancefloors. After Andrea, Mesteno present us “Bettina”, a quite more pumpy lad making us remind some typical Masomenos or Kreon & Lemos productions with a high pumpy beat and some jazzy loops that fit perfectly in it. The tech house rhythm marks presence in this one again imputing itself like a fingerprint of Mesteno’s music. “Melinda” closes this fabulous Ep in a great way, this one is a more mysterious one where you listen the first minute and you still can’t imagine what’s coming out of there. Well, I won’t ruin it for you but I can tell you that this is a deep delicacy, typical on Upon You, in those kinds of tracks that keep getting up and down always creating an enormous urge to dance. Another must have production, buy it and keep it like gold cause you can’t get much better than this.

Marco Resmann – Paradise Lost

cs345331-01a-big Upon You gets back to the scene with a release from one of their favorites producer: Marco Resmann aka Phage. Minimaland has a post of this guy’s first release – “Watercolour”, released by Mobilee – and now, after two years we get to cover another great installment from Mr. Resmann, this time released by my favorite label. So the plot is set: perfect label, awesome producer…  the result is an outstanding Ep. It all begins with an edit version of “Paradise Lost”. a track build step by step that starts very dark and smooth but rapidly grows to a kind of underground euphoria full of hypnotic crisped patterns. After this amazing piece of good taste the original version shows up as a light version of the first, not as pumpy, but with an improved minimal sense that you can only listen in releases of labels like Upon You. It’s definitely the track of the Ep that better suits to Minimaland standards. “A Pace of Life”, in the B side finalizes this production in a deep dark style in those kind of night rhythms that the dancefloor will certainly appreciate. Release nr.20 on Upon You.

Channel X – Burning Train

Upon You is a label well known by all of our readers. We generally like their works and once again this is not an exception. In their 15th release they invited the duo composed by André Quasar and Mirko Hensel aka Channel X to lead the decks. They previously released works to Stil Vor Talent and Kassete Records, i must say that i didn’t knew this guys but their works is pretty interesting.
Burning Train has got two original musics and a remix performed by the famous Ruede Hagelstein. In the a side you pass by a “Lost Train”, a pure underground techno track with a hard bassy beat and a step by step construction, just as we like it! It’s a track perfectly suitable to the night pumpy rhythms that you’ll surely appreciate. In the second track a “Hot Candy” is given to all of us… a typical minimaland lovers track, pretty well constructed with all things appearing in the right time! Amazing nigh track with a wicked dry beat, amazing hit-hats and a hot pace setting it up, rhythm non stop so you can dance till you can say no more! Finally in the b side Ruede Hagelstein appears giving “Hot Candy” a completely new feeling… he turns it into a deep groove with a soft melody gently enhancing the track to after hours sessions. It’s also a nice track giving the tender touch that this Ep seemed to beg for. This turns this release into a must have one, with a different mixture of textures and flavours.
Burning Train is Upon You.

a1 – Old Train
a2 – Hot Candy
b1 – Hot Candy (Ruede Hagelstein remix)
