Prins Thomas’ Full Pupp label, in its short 3 year history, has become a leading light in Norway’s burgeoning electronic music culture. With its roots firmly imbedded in Oslo distinctive nu-disco scene it has been responsible for some of the most exciting music of recent years drawing on the sounds of Detroit techno, low slung house and of course cosmic disco. Now Full Pupp is set for the release of the label’s second artist album following on from the critically acclaimed debut from Blackbelt Andersen.
Ytre Rymden Dansskola are Marius Våreid and Jarle Bråthen a pair who have been fine tuning their sound since they appeared on the scene some years ago. They first came to light on Lindstrom and Prins Thomas Essential mix for BBC Radio1 a few years back and from there joined the Full Pupp family and saw their debut single for the imprint in 2007. The act name, though seemingly unpronounceable (at least to the English speaking tongue), apparently means ‘Outer Space Dance School’, an appropriate moniker for a pair who seem to have mastered the cosmic sound of the future.
This eponymously titled debut album is a real breath of fresh air in a world of samey electronic productions, Vareid and Brathen themselves describe their music as “deep sea diving-tropical island/cosmic/space/contemporary disco”, and they are not wrong, this is warm, engaging and slightly surreal in every sense.
From opening cut ‘1001 Natt’ with its unexpected time signature and hypnotic analogue synth work to the dub infused closer ‘Over Og Ut’ there is a rich diversity that keeps you hooked. Previous Full Pupp singles ‘Kjappfot’ with its wondrous deep house elements and ‘Afterski’ with its uplifting string stabs are certainly highlights, but there are no lulls in this albums sonic soundscape with each record bringing something new and inspiring to the table.
Full Pupp has set itself a hard task to follow after the acclaim surrounding its debut compilation and Daniel ‘Blackbelt’ Andersen’s incredible debut but with this superb album from Ytre Rymdem Dansskola it is clear that the depth of talent behind the Oslo imprint is not to be underestimated. And for every aspiring ‘nu-disco’ producer out there is would seem that there are lessons to be learned from the Outer Space Dance School.

Minimaland feedback: Not everything can be hard smashed up rough hard beats to the head! Sometimes old school sounds are essential, specially for the ones that have been enjoying dance music for as long as I do. 90’s nu deep disco house is back! Highly recommendable
